About this deal

As it turns out, each member of the clan goes beyond the grave and each brings back their own personal demons that they must find a way to conquer. Schumacher frequently falls into the trap of not being able to deliver a decent ending to his movies – and indeed cheats here by dismissing potentially devastating medical side effects with a joke – but the ride he offers along the way is more satisfying than not, and this is one of his more rewarding efforts. There is a surprisingly small photo gallery (13 images) consisting of publicity shots and production stills. Schumacher puts his mark on the film, giving an edge that we look back at and admire in the films of the 90s. They go over the score and the look of the film and also offer up insight into the backgrounds of the different cast and crew members that worked on the picture in addition to offering some critical analysis of the picture along the way.

In Visions of Light (2022, 18 minutes), cinematographer Jan de Bont and chief lighting technician Edward Ayer talk about the aggressive lighting design and expression of themes and storytelling through color. The contrast within individual shots can be shocking, ranging from deep, pure blacks to intense whites (or colours) and clean gradients in between.Challenging Nelson for both the leadership and the girl is Labraccio, played by the always-watchable Kevin Bacon ( Tremors). In Visions of Light, director of photography Jan de Bont and chief lighting technician Edward Ayer talk about getting involved in the project, working with Schumacher, the style of the film, shooting in Chicago, the importance of lighting, using color and shadow to enhance characters, the importance of operating the camera, and overseeing the 4K restoration. please or things have been improved for this release (I suspect it's the latter) with both DTS-HD Master Audio 5. After a somewhat rough start during the opening credit sequence, the cult psychological horror flick is resuscitated for Ultra HD with a highly-attractive HEVC H.

Atonement, a new video interview with composer James Newton Howard and orchestrator Chris Boardman, runs just under twelve minutes. They make some interesting comments about another Schumacher film, Falling Down, and if a label ever decides to do a new edition for that one it may well be worth pulling in these two for it.Regardless, Flatliners is a film that gets better with age because it’s more about the “what if” than the “what is. For example, Joe Eszterhas and the insane amounts of money he received for scripts that are mostly forgotten today never comes up. It's a very dark looking picture that has a strange visual style to it but at the same time, the look is both appropriate for and complimentary to the story being told (and in a lot of ways it is very reminiscent of the director's work on The Lost Boys). A very nice release though I do think it would have been nice to get the arrow limited edition release nice rigid case but hey just glad to get flatliners on 4K.

Dialogue is sharp and clear and mixed appropriately through the sound field based on the position of the respective characters, though most of the dialogue is focused to the center front.

In the world of horror, Joel Schumacher's Flatliners should be admired for his ambitious attempt to graft B-movie cliches onto grander metaphysical themes at a time when the genre was still largely focused on creatively exaggerated kills, gruesome gore, and boobs. Supplements are fine for what they are but it’s the incredible presentation that make this one a must for fans. Film critics Bryan Reesman and Max Evry deliver an engaging and informative audio commentary filled with a steady stream of production stories, trivia and behind-the-scenes information. Continuing from there he then explains what Schumacher and the cast brought to the film, Filardi attributing a lot of the humour within the film to Oliver Platt, and he then talks about how he never took full advantage of the film’s success to push his own career. Considering the only extra on the Mill Creek version was a trailer, these newly-produced segments are a real treat.
