About this deal

Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Although set in Scotland, memories of the hell on Earth that was the slave colony in Jamaica are ever present in Knight and Wedderburn’s minds.

Joseph’s dreams are branded selfish and ungrateful by Wedderburn, and all previous amity is abandoned. Sumbwanyambe is simultaneously sophisticated and direct in his characterisation, not only of Knight and Wedderburn, but also of Wedderburn’s wife, Margaret, and of Annie Thompson, the servant at Ballindean who would become Knight’s lover and, ultimately, his wife. Knight has formed an enduring friendship with his master, which is not to the liking of Wedderburn’s young wife, who feels increasingly neglected. After the brutal things they would have been exposed to, how did they then, ten years later, come back to ‘civilised life’ and not be impacted by that? But the walls of Ballindean do not keep secrets — their affair unsettles Lady Wedderburn, whose bitter loneliness is only deepened by the close bond her husband has with Knight. Encircling on Knight, whose struggle with owner Wedderburn went on to stamp legal history when Knight won his freedom: but freedom is more complex than physical bondage. Lady Wedderburn strongly disapproves not only of their love affair but also of the close bond that has developed between Knight and her husband. I’m fascinated by what was different back then, but at the same time, we’re asking, ‘What is it about these human beings that speaks to us profoundly today?

As described in The Times by theatre critic Allan Radcliffe, Enough of Him was “gripping” and “unsettling”. James Robertson’s eponymous 2003 novel sets Knight’s story against a rich backdrop of fallout from the Jacobite uprising, Enlightenment Edinburgh, and Scotland’s immersion in the transatlantic slave trade. I don’t believe human beings have changed so much that there wouldn’t have been some kind of post trauma. And as the keeper of the house, Lady Wedderburn has reasons of her own to resent Knight’s relationship with her husband. Enough of Him is sharply directed by Orla O’Loughlin and given intelligently sparse and evocative design by Fred Meller and Emma Jones. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. He confesses to his wife—played with subtlety by Rachael-Rose McLaren—that he cannot have a healthy sexual life due to the hideously violent sadism of his relations with black slave women in the Caribbean colony.

It is discussed in the Oxford Companion to Black British History (2007), while Joseph Knight has gained an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. But, for Joseph, his future is tied up in the past — physical freedom is one thing, psychological freedom another. The National Theatre of Scotland has described the play as a compelling domestic drama and a thrilling exploration of the dynamics of power: between slaves and free men, servants and masters, and husbands and wives. The play explores the true story of Joseph Knight, an African man who famously freed himself through the Scottish courts in the late 18th century after being enslaved by a plantation owner in Scotland. But Orla O’Loughlin’s direction commands you look forward, even as we sense others in the room turn their hands in shock, disgust, and embarrassment.
