About this deal

Rather its mainstay is nautical charts and popular fiction (Baldree gives us little glimpses of this). It does the impossible: showing us a character twenty years before her story, and making us hold our breath to see what happens next. As before, this is an LGBT friendly novel with Val's status as a lesbian recognized even if her canon romance hasn't shown up yet. i feel very obliged to make this comparison dot in this review, and it truly means a lot to me and my heart: i started to read this when baldur’s gate 3 was dropping, and i couldn't help but really see the connection of how these characters we are kind of recruiting based on trust and friendship and how these explorations with them feels like discovering this seaside town’s map completely with each new quest. She is the one who invited Viv into the cult that is literature and shows her where true happiness lies: books.

There’s a bit more excitement and adventure, without compromising the comforting ambience of this world and its characters.

It goes without saying that readers reading this book and Legends and Lattes will most likely be readers who love reading books. Thank you to NetGalley, Travis Baldree, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. It’s wonderfully wholesome, and I hope heralds the rise of a 'slice-of-life' sub-genre in modern fantasy. Maybe Val will be the one to introduce the indoor mall to the world after acquiring a gigantic abandoned palace she can't afford to maintain for her own. I was so over the moon to be allowed an early copy of this book on NetGalley, as Legends and Lattes is one of my all time favourite reads of all.

Whatever the reasons, since the release of Legends and Lattes, I still haven’t found many cozy fantasy books or series that attract my interest as much as Legends and Lattes did. Some bittersweetness is inevitable, but Baldree reminds us that the past—even our mistakes—is the fertile soil where we plant the seeds of a beautiful future. This is a book for those who were once young and pulled between fighting the world with all they had . Traditional publishing tends to follow trends, and cozy fantasy was (and is) one of the trends in the market. This is a low-stakes fantasy that delivers exactly what's advertised: a wholesome, cozy novel that feels like a warm hug. This book left me with such a warm, happy, comfortable feeling, which you don't always expect from a book with orcs, necromancers, skeletons and mercenaries, but that is the wonderful thing about this series. This prequel is the perfect place for readers to start Baldree’s cozy fantasy series where folks band together for good, and evil is conquered through cleverness and friendship.
