I encountered a fairly 'un-desireable' character a few years ago who thought it funny to broadcast obscenities to other radio users (by selecting the same channel in use), however the correct setting of CTCSS will reduce chance of you hearing stuff you might not necessarily want to hear while on site. I think the kids would need to be 4+ as they need to understand that they have to hold the button down whilst they talk. They don't have the distance suggested in the instructions which I think is 5km but we use them in a field down the road and can hear back at home once we're going back up the hill. They haven't actually run out of battery despite a few hours of being off the charger, so I would say that they keep enough charge for the time they're required by my 2 daughters. The sound quality is very good as well, we have tested them for up to 2 km range and there were no noises or breaking up.
