About this deal

The Smeds and the Smoos is on BBC One at Christmas with voice artists including Bill Bailey (comedian and Strictly winner), Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton), Sally Hawkins (Paddington movies) and Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey). It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! While the Ghost states that he’s the most scary because of his haunting, the Witch is proud of her spells.

This title is a riot of slapstick fun and silliness, sure to entice even the most reluctant of readers. Our Book of the Month for Age 5+ is The Baddies, the brand-new picture book from superstar author-illustrator duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs. But when The Baddies set their sights on a new little girl to scare, she soon teaches them that you don’t have to be big to be brave, and that baddies don’t always win. I was very interested to see a ghost on the cover and throughout who bares resemblance with Marley’s Ghost from Dickens’ famous tale - I think it’s amazing that when the young children come across A Christmas Carol (which the majority in England will due to the GCSE spec) they might recognise the ghost after having The Baddies as a staple household item. The drawings as ever are full of characterful mischief and children will find much to see in them - a Gruffalo lurking on a page, for example.

My only question is why are the endpapers purple with white polka dots, when the handkerchief that was the main element in the story was blue with white polka dots? The story is told in long rhymes, making for a great read-aloud book and plenty of places for sound effects and laughter. It is a celebration of our incredibly diverse world as it really is: home to 195 countries with thousands of different cultures, 10 million colours and 4,300 religions. My novel The Giants and the Joneses is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic Princess Mirror-Belle who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. This fantastic activity book is based on the brilliant new picture book The Baddies, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Julia Donaldson is the highly talented author of some of the best-loved children’s books in the world.

With stunning illustrations from Axel Axel Scheffler and intricate details on every page, this is sure to be another treat for little readers to enjoy. A LITTLE BIT BRAVE is a funny, reassuring picture book which shows that we're all a lot braver than we think. Best known for her collaborations with Axel Scheffler, each of these vivid rhyming stories is a triumph of imagination.

But the little girl quickly shows them that you don't have to be big to be brave, and baddies don't always win. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. When a scary, fire-breathing dragon comes to visit, it's up to the damsel to take charge of her story and save the day for everyone. With Donaldson’s heartwarming, inspirational messages about being brave and standing up to bullies, a wise and enchanting story in a rhyme perfectly created for reading aloud, and Scheffler’s stunning and richly detailed illustrations providing lots to spot on every page, this is a creative partnership made in children’s reading heaven!

The girl is not afraid of the baddies, as gender stereotypes might predict, instead she's accepting of their presence and either ignores their aggression or tries to help and care for them. Though there are "baddies" who try to scare the girl and turn her to stone, the girl is not at all bothered by them, so young readers will not be, either. Julia and Axel are the team that have created picture book favourites such as The Gruffalo, Stick Man, Zog and Highway Rat - all of which have been made into animated films premiering on BBC1 Christmas Day. Finally take your parcel to your local Post Office for posting and ask for a proof of posting receipt. Each of them tries to scare her and steal from her, but her bravery shines in ways they don't expect and might not be able to overcome.Captivating, full of opportunities for giggles and even a story for the bigger children… (yes adults that’s you!
