While Morgen’s kaleidoscopic editing seems a promising approach at the start, his utilization of the same bag of tricks again and again becomes less illuminating and rather monotonous by the time the film limps to the finish line. Even properly preserved material -- like the one that is used during the Los Angeles and Berlin segments looks wonderful in 4K and 1080p. Will compare Bowie's blu ray playability with Criterion's blu ray release (30 Jan 2024) of Dee Rees's "Mudbound" and will update.

I'm also very devoted to the CBS reality TV show Survivor, which I started watching in 2002 when its fourth season started. capturing the subject during different stages of his career, also detailing a growing comfort with the process of promotion.

Familiar songs are frequently excerpted and layered atop one another, creating sounds that are simultaneous familiar and new. Even more so than in Cobain: Montage of Heck, his 2015 film about Kurt Cobain, Morgen is less interested in factual biography than in eliciting a sense of the man as an artist and personality. Also, the glue that is supposed to make everything stick together is Bowie's words -- the recollections, descriptions, and confessions -- but they are not matched properly to make the tone, energy, and style of the visuals come together well. It’s not satisfying as a concert film and thus not particularly suited for rewatching, because there are no complete performances included that one might long to hear again.Aurally, Moonage Daydream is most reminiscent of “Love,” the soundtrack to the Beatles’ Cirque du Soleil show. It's Bowie who narrates this story, who informs the thrust of the piece, and whose voice is magnified up large - he's the propulsive force which gives Morgen his muse. It's no lie to say at the start, it's a visual overload, scenes interlacing, quick cuts, screaming fans, and musical mayhem all coagulate into one opening sequence that's heady and thrilling. More significantly, though, Morgen features animation from Stefan Nadelman throughout Moonage Daydream that ranges from spacey science-fiction, with recurring images of a lunar eclipse and a girl traipsing on the moon, to Stan Brakhage-like abstraction.
