Her writing and her black and white line drawings are both great art and they are fused together allowing her to produce masterpiece after masterpiece. Talking to my Scandinavian friends, I discovered that Jansson was writing as much for adults as children and decided to re-read her. The book was also sadly beautiful in its own way, but I don't think this is one I'd read over and over again. There is a wisdom in these stories, as well as a deep connection with nature, that I suspect will appeal to adult readers more than children.As a therapist, I can only applaud how well her characters face these problems and slightly spooked to discover the solution is something I try and teach my clients today.

Not once did the family think of Snork or Snorkmaiden when they completely moved with the intention of living on a remote island for the rest of their lives.The story began dark, and it only got darker and more suffocating the longer it continued, a feeling of inevitable doom lingered around the lonely island and the huge lighthouse the Moomin family moved into. Eventually she starts painting the walls of the lighthouse with flowers until she's drawn all of Moominvalley. Jansson is said to have used real-life Söderskär Lighthouse in Porvoo as a model when writing the lighthouse island of the book. In it, depression cannot be overcome: sadness, loss and despair are all integral parts of life, and we must learn to live with them. Moominsummer Madness is the transitional work and Moominpappa At Sea is the best of the later works.
