If anyone knows a non-historical work by her, I would try it, bc she has a brilliant imagination, I think. But, it isn't long until the genius of why this is needed comes to light and the story-line gels into a right rollicking mystery/suspense! It's an entire magical system but you never feel like you're drowning in too much information or left floundering by too little. I like how the author explains the MCs' origins gradually throughout the plot rather than all at once at the start of the book. The main timeline is 1846 and thirty one year old author, Merritt Fernsby, has just inherited a house on his very own little island.
Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult.
The story of a haunted home, the guy who unintentionally inherits it, and the lady who helps tame it is told in this gorgeous, entertaining tale.

If you could take the enchanted characters from the Beast's castle and sprinkle them with a little magic from Hogwarts, then you'd have Keeper of Enchanted Rooms. I won’t even get into my favorite character, Owein, who stole the show and is sure to steal your heart as well. her ideas are still stellar - she really is brilliant - but the execution just isn't nearly as substantial.There are magics in the house and at first it seems to resent the presence of the new owner but things change over time and as the back stories of the house, the owner, the housekeeper and the previous residents are revealed so to are new challenges to be overcome and evil from the past resurfaces to threaten their lives. This property has been vacant for more than a century, but Merritt, who doesn’t really have an alternative, is happy to move in. My only complaint about book 1 is the romance of will they or won't they was drawn out and at times rather annoying.
