About this deal

Now, I know what seems obvious, the loneliness of Covid-times and the absence of Connection in times like these, etc - yes, that is relevant here, but the reason why I was so moved goes way deeper. On Connection and, to a lesser extent, The Bricks That Built The Houses made me realize how crucial rhythm, music, and stage presence are to Tempest's art.

It is a rambling collection of things that sound meaningful by the nature of the topics mentioned and the heaviness of the big words being used all the time, but that carries little actual substance. The part where it just told me to put my phone down, be present in the moment and “pay attention to the details“ when I cross the road, feed the cat or cremate a parent? In fact, when discussing connection, Tempest often refers to their live performances and the unique power they have to connect performer to audience member. A wonderful and interesting read that I could relate to as well as finding a new way of looking at things. The only parts I found interesting (probably because they had some narrative cohesion and weren't just nebulous, jumbled streams of consciousness) were Tempest's own personal anecdotes, although these were generally brief and infrequent.

From Nobel Laureates Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter to theatre greats Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett to rising stars Polly Stenham and Florian Zeller, Faber Drama presents the very best theatre has to offer.

Creative connection is anything that brings us closer to ourselves and fellow human beings, and it has the potential to offer insights into mental health, politics and beyond.

What makes this little book so involving, though, is how Kae links the importance of creativity to the importance of connection.

Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.
