At Il vero gusto Italiano ltd, we are more than just a restaurant, we are a point of interest for food lovers. Vero Gusto sauces are flavorless, have no added preservatives and have no added sugar (they only contain the sugar that is naturally present in the ingredients). For me it all came together to make an experience I want to repeat and am happy to recommend to others.Once the restaurant got up and running (helped along by an amazing review by the one and only Martin Dawes, Sheffield’s infamous food critic), our family welcomed two new members! Then, a food reviewer from the local rag came in and within a week of his review the footfall had trebled and it’s never stopped. We even did an all dayer once, starting with morning coffee then lunch, then wine, then cake then dinner and were the last to leave that evening (we’d wisely allowed the next day for recovery). Now that’s what caught my attention because at that point I was going for the duck but was mentally grumbling I’d have to pay extra for spuds. And the more deeply we fell in love with the people, the more motivated we became to bring authentic Italian food to the heart of Sheffield.

Overall, Il vero gusto Italiano ltd is an outstanding restaurant that offers an authentic taste of Italy in the heart of Birmingham. We came here as a family of 4 for our daughter’s 21st having booked the table many weeks in advance. For Lemmy and I, it all started when we were wandering around Sheffield one winters’ day back in 2008 looking, as always, for good Italian eateries which, at that time, were about as rare in Sheffield as a cream free spaghetti carbonara.WE HAD gathered for pre-dinner bottles of Peroni, just to get us in the mood for our Italian evening, and scrolled a little apprehensively through VeroGusto’s menu. The service and food was outstanding, arrived a bit early so we were asked if we wanted to sit at the table or in the wine bar while we waited, we sat.

I’ve known this restaurant across two locations and three changes of name ever since Esterina Celva and partner Bruno Saverio opened on Church Street as Gusto-Italiano. We add selected ingredients to 100% Italian tomatoes, such as Datterini tomatoes and DOP Genoese Basil. Whether you are in the mood for a hearty bowl of spaghetti bolognese or a mouthwatering margherita pizza, you can expect nothing but the best from our kitchen. Expensive bottles of wine line the back of a long narrow room which once housed the town’s tourist information office but which goes back to Georgian times.

The Sheffield food scene was actually buzzing around this time and there were lots of new places to try and Vero Gusto seemed to always be on our radar but on a “next time Gusto” type of thing. It differs from other basil varieties for its medium-sized, light green leaves and for its sweet and delicate aroma, which alone can make the difference. The meat had held together but the texture was so soft and tender you could have sucked it up through a straw.
