About this deal

I completed an ESRC-funded project on this theme with Dr Monica Degen at Brunel University in 2009, in which we compared how people experienced two rather different town centres: Milton Keynes and Bedford. With vibrancy, lucidity and energy, this stone-cold classic reaches its fifth and refreshed edition at just the right time. Since I am reviewing the second edition, Rose also speaks directly to the changes from the first to the second addition and provides a rationale as to why two new chapters appear in this edition. The best way I can think to explain this is a psychological experiment where they had an honour system in a tearoom - you can have a biscuit, but you need to put some money into a jar if you do.

The ways in which distinct audience bring their own interpretations to bear on an image’s meaning and effect. This new edition of Gillian Rose s bestselling Visual Methodologies text has been comprehensively revised and updated. This chapter is situated to discuss the field of visual culture and front loads much of the theoretical framework that will be used in the following chapters. This was not great when my kids were at home because that second shift coincides with after school and dinner and homework, and as all parents know, no child seems to understand the words “do not come into this room, I am working” because “err, I know you said not to disturb you, but…”. The first chapter primarily focuses on setting up the ground work by roughly defining Visual Methodology and providing historical context to visual culture.

Basic take away here is that there are signs that are made up of what is signified – something that exists in the world – and what it is signified by – a word or image. Also, there’ is a slightly odd ‘utopia’ vibe to the images which is not dissimilar to something Roland Meyer has identified as typical of Midjourney’s generated images. In this paper, I will argue that the theories of contemporary visual culture have been noticeably influenced by critical view of culture, since, I believe, the critical view of culture has provided the visual culture studies with the strategy of detecting signs and codes to challenge positions of power, domination, and possibilities for social change.

No references, no footnotes, not too much qualification and specification (which carries risks of course).

It’s a book published by Inventory Press as well as an online resource, and Mindy is presenting it at a number of venues over the next few weeks. One of the reasons I like writing this blog is that I can go with the flow, when it happens, just keep tapping away in an everyday voice.

This chapter uses fine art as examples and outlines the words necessary to describe the meaning that these visuals are attempting to convey. Semiology is the next chapter and, as she says, it is “centrally concerned with the social effects of meaning”. It would hardly be practical to analyse every image that ever appeared in National Geographic, but that then raises the issue of how do you select the ones you are going to look at? My book Visual Methodologies is published by Sage and has gone through five editions since its first in 2001. She starts by saying that there are five aspects to visual culture – images do something, even if not in a way that is easy to translate into spoken language.

If “the urban is the embodiment of difference and the machinic production of difference ” (Simone 2022: 16), how are digital technologies entangled in the emergence of urban difference? Media Arts Specialists’ License Cultural Practitioner, Publisher, 2022 Preliminary Candidacy Status for the Doctor of Divinity, D. Interaction between people and cultural elements is dialogical and is organized in intransitive hierarchical structures. These two chapters are directly related because, chapter 9 attempts to understand the observer and chapter 10 provides a method to analyze observers from the focal point created by chapter 9. The main idea here is that, “interpreting images is just that, interpretation, and not the discovery of their ‘truth’.
