About this deal

Perhaps the most vitriolic attack ever launched on the American way of living--from politicians to professors to businessmen to Mom to sexual mores to religion-- Generation of Vipers ranks with the works of De Tocqueville and Emerson in defining the American character and malaise. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, Philip Gordon Wylie was the son of Presbyterian minister Edmund Melville Wylie and the former Edna Edwards, a novelist, who died when Philip was five years old. The second episode of Inspector Lewis's fifth season on Masterpiece Mystery features two of my favorite things -- Shakespeare and Toby Stephens (I figure by this point my passion for Lewis and Hathaway goes without saying, lol! The bitter and erudite Mr Wylie was a couple decades ahead of his time on sexual mores, and does a good job on ripping the state of education, politicians, and statesman.

While he held up his late mother as an ideal against whom no living woman could compete, he never enjoyed a warm bond with his father, a stern moralist who subjected Philip to acts he considered deliberate cruelty, such as getting his son circumcised at 18 months without the benefit of anesthetic. Vacuous creatures, these women occupy themselves with radio soap operas and movie fan magazines and play bridge “with the voracity of a hammerhead shark. Unlike during previous instances like this (in The Great and the Good, for instance), James doesn’t pull away to brood, and Lewis doesn’t offer any wisdom. It is disturbing that after five decades of self-congratulatory war, mass-murder, social-upheaval, scientific advancement and economic growths, the only thing that has changed is the technology generally available.People who misunderstood what Phil was writing assumed he hated women (a “misogynist”), but really he loved the women in his family and among his friends; what he hated was cruelty and selfishness in anyone.

Still, he doesn’t actually do anything, doesn’t try to show Peterson up when he gatecrashes Lewis and Laura’s lunch… date (?By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The tremendous expenditure of energy writing it brought on the acute, congestive heart failure and perhaps, coronary infarction which, soon after, terminated his writing career,” Truman Frederick Keefer wrote. As someone with a lifelong interest in ecology and conservation I really appreciate this opportunity to learn more about various related subjects. The first novel doubled the circulation of The Blue Book Magazine when it was serialized, and Paramount Pictures promptly bought the movie rights to both books, initially planning to have Cecil B. I was ready to give this 4 stars – a police procedural albeit with an ecological twist – but then it became so exciting and fast-paced, with an unexpected outcome that I upped it to 5 stars (at least).
