I'm not generally drawn to storytelling in music, nor vaudeville, 'beat' style poetry, heavy blues influence, and a handful of other characteristics which Waits has at some point or another leaned on hard. But for those of us on the train, we sit back and are treated to a piece of musical theatre that makes the world seem bright, lurid and garish when we emerge. The album divides the story neatly into two acts and although titled 'un operachi romantic', there is no opera in Franks. Then you realise, after about the fourth listen, that life is indeed a vegas devil german barroom cast as an operatic spaghetti western and that fozzy really has missed his train. A review, essentially, is just one man's opinion, someone who came to the show and either liked it or didn't like it.Therefore none of the rock star posturing of his peers, because there's just a touch of silliness and absurdity to it all, no matter how genuinely heartfelt. I suspect that it went missing in a house move, along with many other favourites that I am gradually replacing.

Even when percussion is absent, the body-movin' tendencies are still present as accordions, pump-organs and even a rooster twist the narrative through a carnival of broken dreams. Frank was renamed Frank O'Brien (Big Time video) and transformed a despondent and penniless accordian player with very Waitsian qualities.
