This eventful crime thriller is once again set in Aberdeen, Scotland, and we find DS Logan McRae, after having a good working relationship with DI Insch, but due a botched raid resulting in the death of PC Maitland, he's demoted to the Screw-Up Squad, let by the heavy smoking female DI Steel. I know there are some who don’t like this story for its darkness, but I live for a gritty tale like this. There's something about being handed a wadge of cash as you clamber off the minibus from the heliport, having spent the last two weeks offshore and the last two hours in an orange, rubber romper suit / body bag, then blowing most of it in the pubs and clubs of Aberdeen. In the mean time, he's got enough to worry about with prostitutes being mutilated and killed and an arsonist setting fire to random buildings.Despite the incompetence and abrasive attitude of Detective Inspector Steel Logan eventually gets there in the end.

Good cops, bad cops intelligence, three dimensional characters and you're still guessing right to the last. Stuart MacBride is the author of several novels featuring DS Logan McRae, and the near-future thriller Halfhead. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file.Sometimes with series of books I find the first one excellent so really look forward to reading the next one and it ends up being a bit of a disappointment, but not this one, certainly not! Tuo metu ji man didelio įspūdžio nepaliko, bet pasirodžius antrai šios serijos knygai, nusprendžiau suteikti jai antrą šansą.

And you'll meet Inspector Steel, a force of nature who can hurl epithets better than anyone else in fiction; her rival, Inspector Insch, who is a walking atom bomb; and others. This is not an easy listen in places but has a good conclusion and I look forward to the next audio offering. However I very much enjoyed Logan and his work colleagues and the fact that there is humour as well as darkness in the book. A second arson and the death of a prisoner increase the pressure put on the police to solve the cases. DI Steele was interesting but there's only so many times I can read about her fag-ash and scratching of her sweaty arm-pits. There are fire bombings, prostitutes galore that have seen their better days, unfaithful men by the truck load, drug dealers, murdered girls, and even a dog.

For DS Logan McRae it’s a bad start to another bad day; no longer the golden boy of Grampian Police he’s been palmed off on a DI everyone knows is a jinx, waiting for the axe to fall with all the other rejects in the ‘Screw-Up Squad’. The one thing that drives me nuts about him, though, is that just like the first book, he sometimes misses obvious links or clues. DS Logan McRae was in disgrace from the botched warehouse raid in which DC Maitland was shot – his punishment was to be transferred to DI Steel’s team. I don't know how MacBride manages to make a story based on solving gruesome crimes fun, but somehow he always does.Stuart MacBride (that's me) was born in Dumbarton -- which is Glasgow as far as I'm concerned -- moving up to Aberdeen at the tender age of two, when fashions were questionable. After a police raid ended badly, DS Logan McRae has been demoted to the “Screw Up” squad under the supervision of DI Steel, a chain-smoking, hard-assed lesbian.
