If you are used to Caverna sized resources, prepare yourself as this game’s pieces are about half the size. There is quite a bit of interaction on the map as well and reading where players are and might go is crucial adding weight to your decisions and the game has a lot of opportunities for you to do clever moves with good planning. Obtaining a contract during the first few rounds of the game is going to either earn you money or cost you nothing.

Ultimately this is all to fulfil contracts that will score differently at the end of the game based on the imported goods by all players so if you don’t enjoy get resources, turn them in for points this may not be you but I would advise to try it anyway as this is a really excellent tight design. Clans of Caledonia is played over 5 rounds, with players selecting from a number of actions available on each of their turns. If you’re doing poorly and then suddenly get a string of Export contracts that just happen to show goods that you just happen to have on hand, it can really turn the game around for you. There is however a solo automa which has been designed and I believe is still being tested and may or may not be part of a future expansion which is a lot more complex and simulates a real opponent. The main way to score points in this game is to complete contracts so that has got to be your focus.The market board takes up almost as much table space as hexy Scotland and game wise sits somewhere between superfluous and the most important part of the game, depending entirely on how players decide to utilise it.
