About this deal

But it's certainly a sweet and quick read, though one that requires a good cup of tea (and maybe a sweet treat to pair it with! I like how the book starts with an established relationship, but one which was forbidden and then we see how they adjust to proximity when they manage to run away. you don't have to do this through using pronoun pins or clumsily explaining away the use of gender neutral pronouns as coming from a culture that you tell us literally nothing else about. I wish I could have a whole novel of all the character moments, shenanigans, and romance without the deadly serious world-ending adventure storyline getting in the way”? Kianthe and Reyna are wonderfully flawed characters, but their communication and coping skills with each other is so beautiful.

I really understand the desire to represent a positive lesbian relationship, but Kianthe and Reyna's relationship just felt. Kianthe the Arcandor was by far my fave character and I loved seeing her and Reyna live out their dream. They both have a lot of anxieties due to their upbringings and positions but they work through their issues with proper communication, and I adored that aspect of the story. Kianthe and Reyna are such characters, and their interactions are full of wholesome love (and terrible puns) and I love every second of it. Many plot points seemed implausibly convenient and the dialogue was a times uncomfortably cringy and the story overall was also a little too tense and plot-driven for a cozy fantasy.I'd like to thank Rebecca Thorne for providing an ARC of Can't Spell Treason without Tea in exchange for an unbiased review. if the characters already use the correct pronouns for every other character that uses she/her or he/him without having to have a narrative reason for it, why can't they also just use they/them for the characters with those pronouns?

But Reyna is an elite bodyguard to a vengeful queen, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence. It's got a very First Draft of a NaNoWriMo manuscript feel to it, with a lot of darlings that frankly ought to have been killed. When she’s not writing or avoiding writing, Rebecca can be found traveling the country as a flight attendant, or doing her best impression of a granola-girl hermit with her two dogs. Furthermore, their lovey-dovey couples banter and flirting is just a bit nauseating - more like the author just wanted to depict a "perfect" lesbian relationship - which as a lesbian, I just found boring and mildly infuriating. I found the relationship to be frustrating and more often than not felt like I was being told things, not shown things. What follows is a cozy tale of mishaps, mysteries, and a murderous queen throwing the realm’s biggest temper tantrum.
