About this deal

Shirley Conran expertly built up the tension and the interest, and the suprises until I found myself rooting for these spoilt women as they gradually learnt to work as a team, and put their selfishness, snobbery and individual needs to one side, in the interest of the group as a whole. A bloody military takeover turns their island vacation deadly, and they must hide in the jungle while planning a way to escape the island unseen. When I see a pothead, that same part inside me wants to pummel their bloodshot giggly face into bloody pulp. The panic-stricken women tear back to the jungle, where they learn survival tricks from the ship’s captain. Savages is Don Winslow's best book yet - a wickedly funny and smart novel, with a ripped-from-the-headlines story that gets your pulse racing as the action unfolds.

Anyone interested should read it and not listen to an audio version because even the layout of the words on the page becomes part of the structure of the story. When Sasha gets a new boyfriend, Jack, she isn't at all keen for him to meet the rest of the family - especially given that he's a vegetarian. The only time I got excited by the appearance of one of its famous residents was as we encounter Shirley Conran having trouble with her burglar alarm around the time she may have been writing Savages. Even though she overwhelmingly shies away from all things “magical,” there’s plenty within the “fantasy palette” developed by each book that I feel completely satiated at the end of each reading. Don Winslow inserts his (or the narrator's) voice between the reader and the character, as a character of its own. But if you were to take that summary and then guess on the contents of this book before reading it, you would probably hit upon many of the same elements included by Winslow.

But I couldn’t get past the large style-over-substance ratio where the writing technique is pretty distracting and it was frustrating how little I cared about the hollow characters or about any of the events and plot turns. If you are the publisher or author and feel that they do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, send us a message with the mainstream reviews that you would like to see added. Nasty nasty shit in those pre-Surge days, what with kidnappings, beheadings, IEDs severing sticks and blowing off melons. The ‘moral’ of the story does seem to be that it’s better and more fulfilling to live in squalor and constantly on the verge of death in a jungle, than to lead a vacuous, wealthy existence where everything is done for you.

Seriously, Stone's movie may be entertaining, but I have a feeling he may miss the subtle humor and strange beauty of Winslow's writing.

The novel is written with the right pace and flows well, easy to read not a mind storm to get through, I cant fault it at all. Because let’s face it—if a movie is good and was based on a book, then chances are the novel-form is better. They all suck, and I have no sympathy for anybody who is stupid enough to use them to the point of addiction. Story Synopsis: A group of mining hotshots and their wives are having a vacation-cum-business outing on an island paradise.

Conran delivered on the female side, and I got very attached to the five fictitious women she created. It did take me a couple of pages to get stuck into the story, but after that, I couldn’t stop reading. Chon prefers to fight while "peaceful" Ben would rather run, but when Baja raises the stakes, both boys are sucked into a wild and fiendishly brutal ride worthy of the title.

I’m of two minds about whether “Savages,” Don Winslow’s marvelous, adrenaline-juiced roller coaster of a novel, is a rookie reader’s best introduction to his work. I've never had my memory betray me to such an extent upon re-reading a novel, even novels that I didn't reread for decades. She also has great experience as a designer in textiles and as a colour consultant - she had her own paint range. Meanwhile the Savages are bothered by a nosy and determined journalist who will stop at nothing to find out about this unusual family and Ivan's wicked and weird sense of humour. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It’s easier to care about having a good time or justifying one’s behavior until you’re in a standoff and you’re not sure if your gun works. The successful version of the concept novel he wrote can now (partially) be found as the serial novel: THE TWO OF SWORDS.
