About this deal

Simply, I wanted to thank you for all the ways that Badger and his friends Mole, Frog, Fox and Rabbit have touched my heart and my life. Her picture book Badger's Parting Gifts is one of the most enduring of all time, winning many prizes, including the Mother Goose Award in 1985. If you know children who are grieving someone they love, and need support processing their grief and finding uplifting ways to remember those they miss, this soulful little book will be very helpful.

So, these are the circumstances under which my sister and I received the unexpected gift of this beautifully illustrated story. The copy I read was published in 1984 and though beautifully illustrated would not have been vibrant enough to have made it on to the shelves now. I can imagine this would be a comforting read and would help to find some positive thoughts amongst the grief. At the end one of his friends goes to the hill and says hello to badger and hopes that he can hear him. First received and read at the age of 5, recently re-discovered and re-read as an adult, in memory of the wonderful person who originally gifted this book to me.

Celebrating the 35th anniversary of this quintessential and multi award-winning picture book about losing a loved one. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anybody faced with explaining to a child, the death of an elderly relative or acquaintance. So if you’re looking to explore death through a gentle and calming approach I would definitely recommend Badgers Parting Gifts. It left me with a lump in the throat, and I would have no qualms at all about recommending it to any child. It would be more suitable for KS2 and I feel for year 3 upwards due to the themes it explores which younger children may find difficult to deal with.

If these lovely pages from the book do not convince you that the book deserves your attention, I don’t know what else will.Badger appears to be a grandparent figure, and is willing to accept that life cannot go on forever- nature must take its cause. However, i believe it is important to allow children of all ages to explore their feelings, even those that make us feel bad. When one of her students came to say farewell that night, she sat by her bedside and told us that she had brought a book that my mother loved and often read to bereaved children. Beautifully written book, really helped my four year old talk and understand the fact our family dog has died.

My favorite part in the book is Fox’s memory of Badger, in which Badger showed Fox how to tie a knot properly. Once the story has been read to a group of children this would then enable the themes to be explored as a vehicle for questioning, communication and discussion. One the Badger "go’s down the Long Tunnel" his friends are very sad indeed and they are not sure how to cope with the death of their dear friend. i can think of no better way to do this than to read books like these (when appropriate) to open up children's minds to sensitive subjects. The book also has great pictures and illustrations it uses subtle colours and tones to portray the feeling and mood of the book.
