But every once in a while his eyes would narrow, the rural twang would disappear from his voice and he'd discuss financial projections for 1962, the modern art of Picasso and Diego Rivera, and Freudian psychiatry. And to have the vision and ability to create Disney Land and Disney World is pretty impressive to say the least. He frequently took out huge loans throughout his life to finance his latest ideas, and if it weren't for his brother Roy's business acumen, Walt Disney would have gone bankrupt before Snow White -- his first and biggest success -- was ever conceptualized. Those who want to know more about the man who created the entertainment empire will enjoy this book.

It's certainly typical in its structure, from rural upbringings on a farm and then Kansas City in the early part of the 20th century on to Hollywood and his start-up of drawing (with good ol' Ub Iwerks! The author skipped from one year to another; at times I felt like I was reading random notes rather than a well written biography. Unfortunately, Barrier sometimes drifts away from his main subject, especially when venturing into the careers of top animators Vladimir Tytla and Art Babbitt. Barrier's deft navigation of a wide variety of historical streams gives Animated Man a uniquely comprehensive and compelling story about Walt Disney.And yet, for the timelessness they enjoy now, several classic Disney films were commercial failures at the time of their releases.
