About this deal

Etch Primer is a paint that is designed to physically bond itself to the substrate to which it is applied.

All Etch Primers need to be left for a minimum of 24 hours at a temperature of 18 - 20 degrees Celsius to dry properly. Always shake well befor use - Our heavely pigmented aerosol spray cans can easely settel out, potentialy giving uneven colour and coverage.

This type of primer is normally available as ‘high-build’ primer. High-build primer has three main functions:

Etch primers can also be used on galvanised metal or on top of existing primer to cover any minor damage in the protective galvanising coating. Etch primers are usually two-component products, which contain an acid activator. The acid etches the bare metal, allowing the primer to adhere strongly to the panel, and providing excellent corrosion resistance. Some paint manufacturers also produce etch primer ‘ready-to-spray’ in an aerosol can for repairs to small areas. Generally, etch primers do not require sanding, and 1K primer (high-build or otherwise) is usually spayed over the top before preparing the panel to receive the colour coat. Etch primers are the only primers suitable for use directly on galvanised panels. More paint finishes are ruined by the application of paint over Etch Primer that is still drying than almost anything else. Dust is the enemy - For a flawless finish on small parts, paint them inside a cardboard box. If you have larger projects, create a poly booth this will minamise dust and give you a cleaner finish. So primers and undercoats do serve different purposes. You may find some coatings that are suitable as both primer and undercoat for certain jobs or surface types. White Spirit and turpentine substitute should not be used as they are firstly not strong enough and secondly they leave a residue on the surface. It is also advisable to use an etch primer on fibreglass and resin mouldings. Fibreglass is manufactured with a gel coat that is designed to be strong and durable without the need for paint. Resin kits are manufactured using a chemical process that is very similar to two part epoxy resins.

Once applied the Etch Primer needs to be left to dry, both to allow the etching process to work and to allow the evaporation of the solvents contained within the paint. Shake your can thoroughly. This is important as if you don't shake it enough the primer won't be mixed properly and you'll end up with an uneven coat. If in doubt, shake more than you expect; you can shake too little, but you can't shake too much. Each of which will provide the right basis for your paint restoration project.
