In 1997, Sapkowski won the prestigious Polityka's Passport award, which is awarded annually to artists who have strong prospects for international success. She awakens to find that she has been "rescued" by a gang known as the Trappers who plan to bring her to Amarillo for a reward. But before they reach Amarillo, the gang stops in the village of Glyswen where they meet another gang, the Nissirs who have their own prisoner, Kayleigh. Geralt consults with a lawyer, Codhringer, trying to discover the identity of the unknown mage trying to capture Ciri. At the same time, Yennefer takes Ciri from the Temple in Ellander to Gors Velen. Yennefer plans to enroll Ciri at the Aretuza school of magic on Thanedd Island, while attending a conference of mages there. While Yennefer is talking business with a dwarven banker in Gors Velen, she allows Ciri a day out to see the city, escorted by one of the banker's young employees. While viewing an exotic menagerie, Ciri inadvertently provokes a disturbance, and uses a magic amulet Yennefer gave to her in case of emergency. Doing so draws the attention of the mages Tissaia de Vries and Margarita Laux-Antille, the former and current (respectively) headmistresses of Aretuza, out hunting for truant students temporarily evicted from their quarters to make room for the visiting mages.

After 14 years, Sapkowski released Season of Storms in 2013. Set between short stories included in The Last Wish, it is a standalone prequel to The Witcher Saga. By the end of the episode, Istredd figures out that Calanthe knew something about what Ciri could really do: magic that could bring about the end of the world. Reading Time of Contempt made me miss the short stories of The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny, where Geralt had his intense bouts with the monsters Sapkowski had created. There is still action a plenty, some of it fantastic in Time of Contempt, but I found myself longing for the original style that made me really love The Witcher universe.In 2015 a Polish audiobook has been released. That's a whole bunch of plate-spinning, but all this can be taken as standard procedure for a fantasy show. The Witcher rewards lore-hardened viewers with Wiki-busting details and convoluted conspiracy-map plotting – even if Netflix’s adaptation is still strangely short on displays of magic or gore-hungry fell beasts. This sequence deserves close scrutiny — full of hints about Ciri’s past and future. It’s also full of familiar faces: Calanthe herself, as well as Ciri’s mother Pavetta and father Duny.
