On 18 May 1861 a fire broke out in the kiln at the distillery which resulted in the destruction of the kiln and about 20 bushels of malt. The villagers managed to extinguish the fire before the rest of the distillery was damaged. [5]

Got some great news yesterday… Eldest daughters’ partner proposed while on hols over in South Australia… on the stroke of midnight… I need to celebrate with with something nice …. Port Charlotte is a lovely village to holiday in as it has plenty to offer. The village has maintained a lot of its character although the area around the pier nowadays are mostly holiday lets. The views from several parts of the village over Loch Indaal are stunning. Take for instance the view down from School Street, or the view ahead when you enter the village. We believe to be called an Islay malt brings with it responsibilities – responsibilities to our community and to future generations here. Of nine distilleries on the island we’re the third smallest, yet we are its largest private employer; 80 of our 111 hundred strong team are based here. This means something.
