About this deal

Nonetheless, it works pretty well as a companion for video since the aspect ratio (10:6) is clearly well-suited for widescreen content. Watching nature videos on YouTube was perfectly pleasant, and whilst the colours aren’t as punchy nor the resolution as crisp as it is on many smartphones, it acquits itself well against other tablets at this price point. Performance The Honor Pad 8’s specifications get it off to a strong start against the iPad. The display is larger, for starters, measuring 12in from corner to corner, with a total resolution of 2,000 x 1,200. The tablet’s base storage is doubled, too, with a generous 128GB; there’s twice as much RAM at 6GB; and faster 66W charging as well. The Pad 8 also scores with its lightweight and high-quality case and features such as good battery life, surround sound from 8 speakers, and DRM Widevine L1 for streaming HD content from Netflix & Co. Despite running Android 12 with Honor’s Magic UI 6.1 skin plastered over the top, the Pad 8 sadly isn’t much different. Multi-window support is welcome, but otherwise it functions exactly the same as any Android smartphone. The app icons are also scaled to the resolution of the display rather than the size, and they look far too big on the homescreen as a result. The Honor tablet has a 5MP front and 5MP rear camera. Of course, you’re probably not buying this for photography, because even a dirt-cheap phone has better snappers, but they’re fit for purpose.

Similarly equipped tablets force the Honor Pad 8 to assume a lower position in the synthetic benchmarks. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G and the Lenovo Tab P11 Plusare closest to the review sample in terms of performance, but they are a little faster overall. The Apple iPad 2021 and the Xiaomi Pad 5are in a much higher performance league. Due to the somewhat outdated Adreno 610 GPU, the gap to the competition in the graphics benchmarks is even greater. The resolution is 1,920 x 1,200. The test data comes from the HONOR Laboratory. Actual size may vary depending on the configuration, manufacturing process, and measurement method. The measurement data standard calculates the screen ratio based on the area of the screen's visible area to the area of the front panel of the whole device.

Software is the make-or-break feature for tablets, and the Honor-designed Magic UI sadly falls down onto the ‘break’ side of things.

camera bump. Actual dimensions and weight may vary due to product configurations, manufacturing processes, Compared to many other Android tablets on the market, the Honor Tab 8 is pretty large, and you’re certainly not going to be using it one-handed. The tablet generally feels sluggish to navigate, but the issues were worse for things like games or heavier apps. We tried to play Northgard and it kept stuttering, freezing and even crashing, and that’s not even the most top-end game we normally try.The Honor Pad 8 houses a Snapdragon 680,which has 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM. The Adreno 610 integrated in the SoC takes care of the graphics processing.

Generally speaking, most casual users are unlikely to need their tablet to be an absolute powerhouse in the performance department. As long as it runs most apps smoothly, that suffices, as most intensive mobile games are often better suited to the smartphone form factor anyway. For some people, these tasks are all you’ll want a tablet for, and if that’s you the Honor Pad 8 will be a fine budget option. But there are lots of other equally viable options on the market for those buyers too. Honor Pad 8 price and availability Again, for some people, performance isn’t important, but it did make the user experience a little frustrating at times. As is tradition, you can’t review an Android tablet without complaining about the software experience. While iPadOS has come along in leaps and bounds over the years, Android’s big-screen experience still feels like an afterthought. The resolution is 1200 x 2000, which technically counts as 2K, though its use of LCD tech and 60Hz refresh rate means it’s not the best-looking display around. The eight-core processor helps the Honor Pad 8 achieve a solid system speed, but does not turn the tablet into a racehorse. Operation is mostly smooth in everyday use, but small stutters occur from time to time. Several open apps may push the Honor to limits, depending on the application. If games run smoothly, this is usually due to compromises in graphics details.
