About this deal

One of the major potentially serious problems with older hot shoe flash units is that they may have a high trigger voltage. There is an ISO (International Standards Organization) standard that states that the trigger voltage for flash unit ignition circuits should be 24v or less. But, many older hot shoe flashes and some larger, studio-type AC-powered flashes have a much higher trigger voltage—often up to 400v—which could damage digital camera circuitry. Maximum voltage recommendations vary from firm to firm and camera to camera. For instance, Nikon says their digital cameras are safe for up to 250v from flash units. Canon recommends 6v or less for some digital models, while others are said to be safe up to 250v. You’ll be able to use this on the entire Sony camera line. Depending on the model you’ll have to use a specific adapter. This is great for Sony users who can go from the more budget-friendly cameras all the way up to the alpha line.

Recycle time (waiting while recharging to Ready after a flash shot) is important, but is hard to judge in the specifications, because the maximum time depends on the type of battery used (alkaline, NiMH rechargeable, etc). Recycle time is specified for maximum flash power using fresh batteries, probably NiMH because they are fastest, but sometimes the longest maximum is specified (alkaline). Sometimes inexpensive units use less robust power converters (to convert AA battery voltage to maybe 300 volts to recharge the flash capacitor for next shot). Low power levels should be very much faster, nearly immediate, but full power takes significantly longer, and discharged batteries take even longer, and alkaline batteries are slower than NiMH rechargeables.

Next group up in price have a menu to select flash modes, Manual, TTL, and other modes, and generally, offer more extra features too. Extra price normally buys bounce and more power level ( Guide Numbers). And probably buys faster recycle time too (and using rechargeable NiMH batteries also improves recycle time). What also changes is the "throw" or distance which the light reaches. Also changing the zoom setting on the flash varies the intensity of the light too. Metz 44 AF-2 (TTL and HSS): This taller, slightly more powerful Speedlight from Metz has rear curtain sync capability, as well as HSS etc. It takes 4 AA size batteries.

Controlling the spill of light is another useful control the photographer has when lighting photographs with flash. For example, one can place a flash somewhat close to the subject and zoom the flash to snoot the light which lights only a portion.By shorting them with each other, a circuit is created between the adapter and flash unit. This will allow you to use the flash function at its best capacity. I was excited about a real camera (in part) because I could use off camera flash - avoid red-eye, and light my subjects better. All you'll need to follow along is a Digital SLR and a hot shoe flash by your camera's manufacturer. Canon has their Speedlite EX series and Nikon has their Speedlight SB series. The flash should also be one that can act as a controller (Master) for other flashes. This means that the ambient has a chance to do its thing, and just before the exposure ends, the flash fires. This can help light trails make sense as the they will "follow" the subject rather than precede it due to the delayed firing of the flash.
