About this deal

At a certain point it becomes too cold to effectively warm up. You can't generate enough body heat either because you are riding slower, because your body has trouble keeping extremities warm, or just because it's too cold. When that happens, it's time to turn to a heated glove; the question is which one? Designed for all weather riding: the Neoprene cuff and loop closure provide a clean connection to your wrist to prevent wind, rain, and snow from sliding underneath your gloves or up your sleeves. Keep your hands dry and warm in all conditions. The edge of the wrist looks a little odd but it keeps the seam hidden inside for better performance (Image credit: Josh Ross) In a nutshell, pogies are the ideal way to keep your hands warm in cold and wet weather. Winter Cycling Gloves and Bike Pogies List The waterproof and windproof outershell is made from nylon, spandex, and a mico-porous membrane – equaling warmth, stretch and breathability – the inside is 100% polyester.

Another great attribute is the accuracy of the fit. I frequently have trouble with the fit of gloves. I'm perpetually right on the line between small and medium and tend to have to use a medium even though it's a bit big. Pearl Izumi gets the medium just right and the fit feels perfect. Although there is some inherent leeway in the design, my fingers come right out to where you’d expect and there’s no tightness between the thumb and forefinger. Everybody will need something different when it comes to fit but these are true to size as compared to the fit guide. These aren't bargain basement pricing but there's nothing warmer at this price level. Pearl Izumi doesn't cut corners to get there either. The lobster glove design pairs your first two fingers and your last two fingers for warmth at a much lower price. It's still easy enough to handle braking and shifting, and there's even touchscreen compatibility, but it does require a little bit more thinking about it at first.. These are the standard, regular gloves with full protection and grippy fabric on the palm side. Most of the time you’ll want to wear full-finger cycling gloves when cycling in winter. Mountain bike gloves With the mercury hovering between 10 and 3 degrees, my hands felt perfectly snug and temperate. Cold arctic winds nagging at the outer fibres never gave rise to chill, or sogginess at the other extreme. Persistent showery rain also had little effect, and formative impressions were generally favourable. I've ridden 40 minutes or so in some persistent rain and though the outer shell turned soggy, the inner remained dry to touch. The sensible cuff design hasn't permitted any to be blown inside either.

These kinds of gloves leave the fingers uncovered, their main function is gripping and wrist protection more than keeping your hands warm. They are not suitable for winter cycling Full finger cycling glovesAs for how well they last, mine still look nearly new going into their second winter season. I like that they are washable (I can't stand stinky gloves and the resultant stinky hands), so I wash them fairly regularly on a delicate wash. The Nordic 2s are designed for arctic winter rides where the temperature hovers around zero, with added wind chill. As GripGrab is a Scandinavian company, you'd hope its designers have plenty of experience and know-how in making a glove that can cope with the most digit-numbing of conditions. But while GripGrab can certainly make a very warm glove, you may not find it perfect for cycling.

Inside the Velocio Alpha gloves you will find Polartec Alpha. Basically this is the newest wonder material. It's incredibly warm for the weight and it breathes better than any other modern synthetic insulation. Velocio wraps a stylish outer with plenty of colours available around Polartec Alpha and makes a glove that covers a huge range of temperatures while keeping the bulk low. You will want to mostly save these for drier days though. Pearl Izumi uses a technology called PI dry to apply DWR at the fibre level. It won't ever wash off but it's still a durable water repellent and that only goes so far. After enough time these will soak through and it becomes hard to get your hands out when they are wet.

Knit gloves are a staple of winter riding in the cold and wet and there is a somewhat endless range of choices for them. Lots of companies make them and I've yet to find a particular advantage to one brand. The Giro Xnetic H20 gets the nod because they have a high visibility colour and some of the best pricing. There are lovers of these style gloves that manage to make them work through an entire winter. I run cold though and I find that in the US Pacific Northwest, these are strictly an option for milder days. For how unique the experience is though, it mostly disappears. The app is set and forget and everything just works seamlessly to add heat all the way to the end of the fingers. It would be great to have the same tech in a less bulky glove but if you need help to stay warm these are the best heated gloves I've tried. The only thing you need to be careful of is keeping them clean as you can’t toss them in the washer.

Gore invented the idea of a breathable membrane. Many of the other options on this list use either a Gore-branded membrane or a duplicate of the same concept. Not every membrane Gore makes is waterproof, but the membrane in the Gore C5 Gore-Tex gloves is absolutely and completely waterproof and guaranteed to be so. Polyester liner enhances warmth and repels water to keep you dry and comfortable in hostile conditions. The deep winter rating comes firstly from the 100% windproof outer fabric. This fabric has a high breathability rating of 15K (15,000 g/m2/24h), so your hands will remain comfortable even if you work up a sweat. A PFC-free DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outside will shrug off light rain and spray.

Altura All Roads Waterproof Gloves

Eric has “over 15 years of adventure cycling experience ranging from Alaskan winters, to high and remote Himalayan passes, to thousands of miles across South America,” so these pogies should stand up to whatever you can throw at them. Liner gloves are thin, lightweight layers that you wear underneath full gloves. They don’t need to be super swanky, and they certainly don’t need to be expensive. Down Low Glow lights illuminate your bike frame with neon light and are visible from the sides. I've been hit by a car that didn't notice my front headlight, and I bet this would have made them look! Gore Windstopper material of course creates a barrier against the wind, whilst allowing you to work as hard as you like without overheating through great breathability. Windstopper material is incredibly soft and flexible, and there is an inner cuff and Velcro adjustment to ensure you get the fit tight.
