Then, there is the ending, the pyshcofantic love story making its soppy plop into a NOT earned, maddening “happily ever after” that forgets absolutely everything we already had established about Sarah, her world, her reasons for divorcing her first husband, and, well, essentially all forms of common sense. There was an armor on this man, a quiet strength that made me think of an old seawall, an oak tree, maybe. The story will be painfully familiar to anyone who’s “dated” in the digital age, but the story is twisty enough to compel you forward.

Even the melody from chapter to chapter had a certain magic to it, a sway that made us enjoy the reading experience and seek it out.

Laurie doesn’t unravel in the same way as that wife-of-a-missing-husband, but there is the same eerie inability to conform to anticipated reactions.
