About this deal

Megan McCubbin reveals the stories of the scientists, rangers and conservationists who are fighting to save these extraordinary creatures from extinction. Although the book was excellent I found myself feeling a bit doom and gloom after reading it, especially as I finished it a day after the UK PM pushing back on some of the UK green commitments. The diversity of life on earth is astounding, with each species perfectly adapted to its environment. A keen photographer, in 2019 she was appointed as the coordinator and judge of Young Bird Photographer of the Year.

He is co-author of the World Health Organization's award-winning Inheriting the World: The Atlas of Children's Health and the Environment. Also included is one plant species, an orchid, making me aware of the practice of plant poaching, which is making many species of plant similarly in danger of extinction. As well as some of the well known species that are teetering on the edge of the abyss that is extinction, she also covers some lesser known species. A really brilliant insight into an array of endangered species with a fantastic mix of facts and real life experiences. There are currently 41,415 listed endangered species, and over 16,000 of them are threatened with extinction.

This book takes just 20 of these amazing creatures, from the 'celebrities' of the red list – the tigers, the northern white rhino, the kakapo – to the lesser-known, and sometimes lesser loved ones, and paints a portrait of them, their world, and the people trying to protect them. Not only is Atlas of Endangered Species a fascinating, immersive exploration of iconic and overlooked species, but most importantly it's a powerful, passionate plea for a wilder future alongside nature. Much like her presenting style, Megan McCubbin's writing has an effortless appeal to a diverse audience, from the curious child to the most seasoned of conservationists. I thought the book is well made its lovely, its nicely presented with further details on the subject and with the added Megan's experiences etc. With a third mass extinction on our doorstep, it's also very timely, and I'm delighted to see that it's been written by one of the foremost of the generation of new, young naturalists that are helping to change our perception and appreciation of the natural world.Megan's enthusiasm for biodiversity and passion to save endangered species from extinction shines throughout. Most well-known for presenting the BAFTA award-winning BBC Springwatch series and Animal Park , Megan is a passionate science communicator and biodiversity activist.
