From our time spent with the FWD-01, we’ve found that the band doesn’t weigh you down, nor does it bounce too much to bother you. They offer decent audio quality by gym-headphone standards and come with a lengthy 16-hour battery life and fast-charge support.

This hasn’t been an issue for me with other earbuds, but perhaps it’s a concern for those who are a bit rougher with their earbuds and fling them into their gym bag. In short, if you’re looking for a pair of earbuds for your workout, Adidas has some that are almost certainly going to work for you with its FWD-01. And then it turned that on its head by including a braided fabric cover and thick rubberized covers on the buds themselves. If you want a neckband design, Adidas' FWD-01 earphones look cool and have a useful app and an Action button that can summon your voice assistant or control Spotify.Adidas estimates roughly 16 hours of battery life, but your results will vary with your volume levels. Given the FWD-02 Sport have been designed in consultation with Adidas Runners, a community of international runners, the IP rating is rather bog-standard.

There’s no active noise cancellation – only a Transparency mode – but, arguably, the design makes noise cancellation a feature that isn’t required.

The buds sport an angular shape compared to the rounded buds used by most manufacturers, and they certainly stand out. The aforementioned Action button can be set up through the app, and different actions can be assigned to single, double, and triple presses, but customization is limited to voice assistants and Spotify controls. Adyen is fully PCI Level 1 (the highest level) compliant and monitored by Trustwave, an ASV and a QSA for the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council. And, as such, it isn’t necessarily the best option if you happen to need to put a lot of distance between yourself and your smartphone.

High frequencies are clearly relayed, perhaps lacking the sharpness of the Beats Studio Buds; but the Adidas’ overall inflection allows for more fun to be had.The only downside is that their chunky design can make them a little clunky to wear during specific workouts, such as boxing or climbing. The buds themselves sport a rather interesting industrial, flecked design, which could have been intended to resemble a pair of chiseled rocks, but depending on your perspective, could also resemble a pair of beat-up earbuds that have seen years of use. But it’s also small enough that the accessories just barely fit without being difficult to place inside.

We've reviewed plenty of sports-focused Bluetooth earphones, and even some that are co-branded with sporting goods manufacturers, but we rarely see any developed and sold by the sports company itself. And, best of all, the app includes customizations for the multi-function button attached to these earbuds. Sporting the classic neckbud design, it’s safe to assume that many will leave the earbuds to dangle around the neck when not in use, and I can say from personal experience that it’s the easiest way to lose them.

Although fine when worn running, their bulk meant the seal would occasionally break while working a bag (boxing training) or wall climbing. If you’re in the market for a solid pair of running or gym headphones with a marathon battery life then the Adidas FWD-01 are a solid choice. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not dropout-free in areas full of wireless and Bluetooth signals, but it certainly performs better than other neckbuds I’ve used in the past, and I certainly didn’t have any issues when jogging (or what I class as jogging, anyway) around the local park.
