About this deal

The wise Viking player will not spread themselves too thin; there is a strong desire to rampage and pillage with their superior forces but they are quickly whittled down. The Viking players often get greedy and will attack too many cities in a Round, resulting in the loss of too many Berserkers. The size isn’t the issue, any bigger and the map would drown in plastic, but I would have preferred simple cubes which can be easily formed into a good looking shield wall, but this is a minor complaint. I am also a sucker for maps, especially ones of England, and this one is beautifully uncluttered and functional. As I mentioned earlier, the real power in the Leaders is that they can move and attack, and after a victory in a particular Shire, they can move on to engage in more Battle until their Movement points expire.

Viking Leaders are a new addition to the familiar ruleset employed in the “Birth of America” series. The defending player then takes dice from each unit’s pool, up to the number of those units in the battle, and rolls them (Ex. Moving units to non-city spaces also has the added benefit of allowing you to command-decision there, since you may only command-decision to a Shire already occupied by your units. On their turn each faction will receive Reinforcements, activate their Leaders (this is mostly for the Vikings as the English don’t get a Leader until the 5th Round), Move their armies, Fight in regions where there are both enemy and friendly troops and then draws cards back up to 3 cards. If the English players are defending, they draw a Fyrd card and bring that many Fyrd units into play in the shire where the battle occurs. If the English are defending a City Shire with at least one Housecarl or Thegn, they may also draw one Fyrd card. Then any units in the Fled Units circle of that faction are retrieved and placed with any friendly army on the board.

If the Viking player gains control of a shire containing a city, place a Viking Control token on the space. We shall be reviewing books, miniatures\toy soldiers, MiniFigs and of course games, plus interviews, model making and AARs! The setup is the same regardless of player count due to 3-4 players simply divides the control of each side. The real advantage you have is that the Vikings will most often invade an area where you did not place extra units.I just always find myself with them spread too thin and have had more than one turn where the Berserker faction could do nothing because they were all wiped out after a back-to-back English conquest to retake Shires.

The Viking Leader cards are shuffled by letter on the back and formed a deck – with the first card, letter A, being placed face up.There are also special event cards that can be played on your opponent's turn, reflecting various historical events such as the conversion of some Vikings to Christianity or the infighting between various English kingdoms. The English begin the game controlling all of England, but then the Viking players invade from the sea to strike deep into English territory! Later that year, the Treaty of Wedmore was agreed whereby the Vikings were able to remain in control of much of northern and eastern England.

The rulebook also includes additional scenarios players can choose to play that mix up the game play a bit with specific win conditions and rules. I am not one of them despite regularly falling asleep to the British History Podcast (BHP) which covered this period for me about 3 months ago. Keep in mind that you will not get any Fyrd when defending these non-city spaces, so I never leave more than 2 units there and command-decision out when I don’t Hit.This is a game that will definitely be sticking around for the long haul in our collection and has finally given me the Viking experience I’ve been looking for in board games. After movement, the player draws back up to 3 cards (revealing and shuffling/drawing if the hand contains no movement cards) and their turn ends. Once drawn, the appropriate figures are placed on the card drawn and the Leader token is placed next to it.
