About this deal

If new firmware is available, the update process happens automatically (assuming you have an internet connection) when the unit connects with your smartphone. Some shifters, such as many Campagnolo options, can be serviced, whereas the ratchet mechanism in Shimano shifters is the equivalent of a Swiss watch and instead requires replacement. A small crosshead screwdriver or hex key. Many Shimano derailleurs use a JIS head. A JIS screwdriver is recommended but not essential.

Fortunately, the instructions aren’t lengthy because the functionality of the device itself is actually very limited. Instead, the One is reliant on smartphone integration to function.

These are top of the range bits of kit from the big manufacturers such as Campagnolo EPS, SRAM eTap, and Shimano Di2. These electronic grouppos ‘sense’ when the chainline is getting too extreme and trim for you. I know, right? Trimm told us that GPX files could be imported via the app, but the instruction manual doesn’t say how to do this and, so far, I can’t find a way. As previously mentioned, there’s also no integration with apps such as Komoot, so currently the only way to use navigation on the One is via the Trimm Cycling app. One of the most difficult things about learning how to shift is the terminology. Low/High, Big/Small, Easy/Hard, Fast/Slow, Front/Rear, One-by, Two-by, Three-by… if your head is spinning already, you may want to brush up on the following vocab words: Adjust the cable tension until the chain runs smoothly on the second cog. If you’re setting up a new derailleur, you’ll need to set the limit screws and B-gap adjustment before indexing the gears. You can read how towards the end of this guide. What you need to index your gears It does do some things well though. It looks smart, especially on its own, and the screen is good quality and easy to read. This machine aims to provide a simple workout for those that need to get their legs moving – whether that is for better fitness or mobility.Repeat this process until the chain shifts up smoothly onto the bigger ring. If you have a third chainring, try upshifting to it and add another half turn if shifting is still hesitant.

As we’ve already noted, the Trimm One looks very much like a smartphone. Sadly, though, it doesn’t operate like one. For a start, it doesn’t have a touchscreen. I had to read the included instructions carefully to find out how to operate the unit, which might seem an odd complaint but is a little disappointing in an age of intuitive tech. This indicates that if there’s enough sunlight the solar panel can genuinely keep the Trimm One charged during normal use. It’s very impressive given how small the solar panel is. Playframes and Play Towers work around a square or a rectangle shape, allowing children to work around, rather than along the equipment. These play frames are a lot larger than the Tri-Play which allows for full sized Trim Trail elements to be used in a smaller space rather than in the traditional ‘strip’ way. Children’s Play Frames are great if you are wanting to replace a traditional climbing frame with a Trim Trails for Schools but only have a limited footprint to work with. Speed Bike: When you were a kid, you probably bragged about the number of “speeds” your bike had to your friends. Whether it was 7, 18, 21-speed, etc., what you were referring to is the number of gears you had on your bike. You could determine this number by multiplying the number of cogs in your cassette (rear gears) by the number of chain rings (front gears) your bike has. For example, if your bike has two chain rings and 11 cogs in the cassette, then you have a 21-speed bike. However, higher-end adult bikes are rarely referred to in this way in the modern bicycle industry because, basically, more doesn’t always mean better. More on that below!

Shift your front derailleur to the smallest ring and your rear derailleur into a cog near the middle of the cassette. An argument could be made that the One’s feature-set is streamlined to prioritise what most cyclists actually use on a regular basis, but it’s hard to shake the feeling you might be paying more for less. Firmware updates

It’s also worth making sure the derailleur mounting bolts, crankset and cassette are fastened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque. For example, even with a smartphone paired the One doesn’t have features such as different activity profiles, workouts, data recording options, smart trainer control, Strava Live segments, or integration with apps such as Komoot. The complete reliance on smartphone integration seems like an odd choice, given it’s aimed at touring cyclists who may not be able to regularly charge their smartphones. The feature set of both the One and the Trimm Cycling app are also limited compared to the (cheaper) competition. Having been in development for more than three years, the One’s most obvious distinguishing feature is its sleek, smartphone-esque looks. The first is an external speed sensor, which mounts to a hub and uses accelerometers to measure the speed at which you’re travelling. Trimm claims this accessory alone helps extend the battery life to 30 hours, or up to 50 hours when the One is also paired to a smartphone. It’s also possible the lower sampling rate for GPS data may have an effect on Strava segment times too. Because of the way Strava calculates segment matches, it’s possible to miss out on segments where the One doesn’t record a GPS data point at the moment you pass through the start or end points, similar to GPS drift. Some users find themselves struggling to push themselves because the lightweight body shifts along the floor and they lose momentum. It feels like a big missed opportunity. The solar panel could be a godsend for touring/adventure cyclists going on epic multi-day rides in remote locations, where opportunities to charge electronic devices might be few and far between.
