Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance (SD, Disc 2, 27 minutes) – A collection of ten bonus 'Galactica' webisodes featuring an alternate storyline that takes place during the third season. Battlestar Galactica' is a tough release to judge visually. The series is often grainy and colors are heavily unsaturated in places, but this gritty washed-out look is the intended style of the filmmakers. On the first disc for each season, Ronald D. Moore gives a brief introduction touching on this subject plus there's a message on startup from Universal stating: Note: With the exception of 'Battlestar Galactica: Remastered', all the bonus featured listed below are duplicated on both the widescreen and full frame versions of the original series discs. There are no bonus materials on either the 'Galactica 1980' discs or the 35th Anniversary theatrical version disc. In their infinite wisdom, the folks over at Universal believe that no one but loyal fans and purists would ever want to see 'Battlestar Galactica' is its original full frame format, so as part of this remastering of the series, they've created a brand-new 1.78:1 widescreen version of each episode. Despite losing information at the top and bottom of each scene, the widescreen episodes are actually pretty well framed and I was surprised at how good most (but not all) of the series works in the new format.Another reason I believe the original series has aged well is due to the fact that most of the main characters are very open about their religious beliefs, something that probably wouldn't fly on network television today, even though the religion on Battlestar Galactica is more Egyptian in nature than it is Christian. 'Battlestar Galactica' was also very much a family show…often to its detriment (a number of episodes are a little too geared toward younger viewers)…which resulted in characters who actually cared about one another, not the least of whom was Commander Adama (played by the late, great Lorne Greene), a leader not all that different than the father figure he played on the legendary 'Bonanza' TV series. So what’s missing? For Caprica, the DVD audio commentaries are not included (16 of them in all). And while you do get a substantial amount of Deleted Scenes and Video Blogs (edited together into hour-long videos), a few of each seem to be missing as well. So you may wish to keep your original DVD discs just to retain those items. Stu Phillips: Composing the Score (480i; 5:02): The composer discusses writing the score, the various themes used in the pilot and series, and recording the score at Fox with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Working in tandem with the above feature and again hosted by McCreary we are introduced to various musicians and the specialist instruments they play, that help to give BSG its unique sounding score and trace his cues from their very humble beginnings to the full on orchestral productions with particular emphasis on the finale score. Another extremely entertaining feature. Playable as individual titles or with a convenient play all functionality running for a combined time of about 63 minutes, each one looks at an aspect of the making of the miniseries; the titles nicely sum up what each segment is about - From Miniseries to series (8'27''), Change Is Good, Now They're Babes (7'29''), The Cylon Centurion (5'26''), Future/Past Technology (7'38''), The Doctor Is Out Of His Mind (7'38''), Production (9'04''), Visual Effects, Epilogue. Taken as a whole this is a pretty comprehensive making of with plenty or detail on everything you need to know about the series from its conception through to its completion. Plenty of in depth interviews conducted with cast and crew give plenty of information about this excellent start to the series.

If you aren't already sitting down as you're reading this review, now would be a good time to pull up a chair. Universal has included supplements on each of the twenty discs in this collection, so needless to say -- we're going to be here for awhile. Sizzle Reel (SD, Disc 5, 4 minutes) – Basically just a preview for the first episode of the second half of Season 2. The Doctor is Out (Of His Mind) (SD, 8 minutes) – All about the good Dr. Baltar played by James Callis. Audio Commentary: 'Guess What's Coming to Dinner' (Disc 2) – Commentary with Ronald D. Moore and writer Michael Angeli. Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 1, 16 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes 'Sometimes a Great Notion,' 'The Oath,' 'Blood on the Scales.'
