Wow, what a brutal war, fighting on that Eastern front in sub zero temperatures must have been horrific for any man, must read for any History/WW2/ War reading enthusiasts. He could be lying of course, but he also describes how the ordinary young soldiers were lied to and brainwashed. Gunter Koschorrek's claims go counter to what I've learned in Antony Beevor's "Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege: 1942-1943" and Beevor's "Berlin: The Downfall: 1945" as well as Dan Carlin's Ghosts of the Osfront podcast. As two historians familiar with the subject matter informed me in response to my related inquiry, such massacres did in fact happen - but only in isolated cases and mainly in the areas that had been annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939/40, not on territory that had been part of the USSR before 1939.The novel describes the origins and events of the Russian Revolution, interwoven with the experiences of Arthur Ransome, then a journalist in Russia. The form will be sent to our Collections Management Team who will use it to improve our object records. Overall if you are interested in WW2 and want to read about it from a different and personal perspective I would pick this one up. Written in a diary format, the book starts strongly but I was left feeling that something didn't quite add up, and I can't really explain what. At once rich in allegory and historical detail, Blood Red Snow White is an extraordinary novel that delineates with clarity of vision individual concerns against the great sweeping expanses of societal unrest.

He didn't seem to be stuck in Stalingrad for too long, fortunately for him, but the retreats he chronicles are still epics of chaos and death. He briefly saw combat in Stalingrad, and was involved in the desperate attempts to avoid being trapped after the Soviet's broke the German lines west of the city. Although the writing was strong and it contained a lot of interest, it pales substantially when compared to Sajer's 'the Forgotten Soldier' opus. The endless and often pointless deaths of his comrades becomes depressing and crushing even for the reader, I do not want to imagine how it was for the real soldiers.

The biggest surprise of many will be the chaotic nature of the German front lines for most of the time. It may be that Koschorrek's diary was a truthful account of the man's experience at the time it was written. Günter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any piece of scrap of paper he could lay his hands on, storing them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave.

Given such doubts about the accuracy and honesty of certain claims, my evaluation of this book cannot be a good one. I have not read many accounts where the German soldiers, not driven by the evil ideology, describe what soldiers on every side were thinking. The first edition hardback published in August 2007 by Orion Children's Books was printed throughout in dark red ink. He tells of the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit - their.

The only war crimes Koschorrek mentions that are perpetrated by the Germans is the execution of wounded Soviet soldiers on the front line by a single German officer. Koschorrek's memoir, unlike so many others, doesn't make any attempt at being literary or philosophical, it's neither preachily anti-war nor a grovelling mea culpa manifesto for the crimes of Germany.
