About this deal

Weight range: Look for a weight range that meets your fitness goals. Most adjustable dumbbells can be adjusted in 2.5-pound or 5-pound increments, so it's important to consider a weight minimum and maximum that fits your needs. Available on its own or as a pair, this user-friendly adjustable dumbbell impressed our tester with its polished performance, scoring top marks for comfort. The rounded shape made it easier to manoeuvre than bulkier options and the rubber grip felt kinder to our hands than most metal weights. This Northdeer dumbbell is a little different to anything we’ve tried previously, as the central bar come with weights permanently attached. These weights have grooved holes; additional plates with built-in screws can be secured to the central bar by twisting them into place (similar to a nut and bolt).

Key features – Main material: Latex-free plastic; Weight range: 3.6-22.7kg; Number of weight options: 8 Overall, they’re a really durable piece of equipment that we use weekly in our strength routines. "I've dropped these from three or four feet up after tough sets of presses, and they hold up just fine," Samuel recounts. (Although we don't recommend making a habit out of dropping any adjustable dumbbells on the regular.) Buy these heavy-duty hex dumbbells either individually, or invest in the whole 13-pair set, which will take you from 2kg up to 30kg and satisfy every training need. That said, even light weights offer enough of a challenge to hit most of your fitness goals, if you think creatively. Varying the tempo of your workouts, selecting more mechanically challenging movements (like subbing goblet squats for Bulgarian split squats) or bundling different exercises into circuits and complexes, can make a pair of lightweight dumbbells feel very heavy indeed. The 552 isn’t the only adjustable weight from Bowflex. The 1090i adjustable dumbbell, for instance, ranges between 4kg and 41kg, while the brand’s adjustable kettlebell ranges between 3.5kg and 18kg.The BRAINGAIN 40kg Adjustable Dumbbells is the equivalent to 17 individual fixed weight dumbbells. Increments: 5kg, 7kg, 9kg, 11kg, 13kg, 15kg, 18kg, 20kg, 22kg, 25kg, 27kg, 29kg, 32kg, 34kg, 36kg, 38kg, 40kg. While fitness fads may come and go, few health innovations have stood the test of time as steadfastly as the humble dumbbell. With a strong claim to being the most versatile piece of gym kit around, variations of these free weights have been contributing to users’ bulging bis and bulky tris since Ancient Greek times. Above all else, the weight spread is impressive, and should prove more than enough for even advanced lifters to perform a variety of exercises at home.

Unlike other adjustable dumbbells we’ve tested (notably the BodyMax range), the selectorized dial feels well-made and easy to adjust. The BodyMax ones seized up and stopped working altogether in under a year. If purchasing in the UK or Europe, the weight is in kilograms, whereas the originals are designed in lbs. This means that the weight moves up in odd increments (4, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18 etc.) We could not fault this set based on the price, weight load, build quality, and ease of use during testing.Weakness: These dumbbells have to be plugged into the wall to change the load, and the maximum weight of the pair we tested (the Jaxjox’s 22.7kg) might not be enough for those well-versed in strength training. How we test

With all the options on the market, it's hard to know how one pair of adjustable dumbbells differs from the next. This isn't a cheap piece of equipment, either, so consider these factors while you shop: To find the best adjustable dumbbells, we tested more than 30 different adjustable dumbbells over the course of the last four years, relying on in-house certified trainers Fitness Director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S., and Senior Fitness Editor Brett Williams, NASM. (Samuel also utilized the top performing adjustable dumbbells with several of his advanced clients.) They list both the metric and imperial weight totals, making it easier to work out how much you’re lifting without converting in your head or with a calculator. Whether you’re looking to add some muscle or lose some fat, lifting weights is essential to maximise results. This kind of exercise is often referred to as resistance training. The 18-piece set comes with two bars, four collars and a selection of smaller weight plates. We particularly liked the inclusion of 0.5kg plates (a unique feature for these ‘bells) as they allowed us to gradually increase the weight when progressing on lighter lifts like the lateral raise or rear delt fly. The basic design of adjustable dumbbells involves a handle that you hold onto during your workout, with a set of weight plates on either end—just like traditional dumbbells. Old-school adjustable dumbbells come with a set of plates of varying weights that can be added or removed from the handle, but newer designs have employed innovative adjustment mechanisms to make adjustable dumbbells more user-friendly. The rubber knurling and plastic central bar felt a bit cheaper than premium metal competitors, and the bulky shape could be somewhat cumbersome for exercises like bicep curls, catching against our thighs during the initial phase of the movement.

You might notice that some of the adjustable dumbbells below have an Esquire Approves logo emblazoned upon them. That’s because each of these products has been put through the wringer by our dedicated fitness testing team. So, when we say Esquire Approves, we really do.We offer an Express Delivery option on certain products for a small additional charge, with delivery times between 1-2 business days. You’re not going to be able to achieve the same levels of strength training that you are with some of the other dumbbells featured above. However, they’re a decent lightweight option for physical therapy and toning as well as cardio workouts. And the non-slip neoprene makes them easy to grip. Weakness: You have to spin the collars on and off every time you want to change the weight, making this a lengthy process. They also tend to have a lower maximum weight than dial and digital dumbbells. Dial The plastic casing around the weight plates meant they made next to no noise during our workout, and the grooved rubber grip was easy to hold on to when things got heated. The dials on either end of the dumbbell moved smoothly, making changing the weight a painless endeavour, and we were big fans of the rounded shape as it allowed us to perform all exercises without ever feeling unwieldy. Adjustable Dumbbells can be used for all your home workout needs and exercises including presses, swings, deadlifts, squats, curls, sit-ups, snatch, renegade row, twists, clean & press, thrust and more.
