About this deal

Passion, experience and care are the authentic and genuine values that guide Mirto Zedda Piras, a house founded in 1854, produced in Sardinia in Alghero following the traditional recipe: only water, sugar, alcohol and wild Sardinian myrtle berries. W&N is predominantly a mixing rum. I wouldn’t really look to sip a white rum at the best of times and I’m certainly not going to start with 63% firewater! You can add water to this rum if you wish to try this rum without a mixer. It’s often useful to do so just to explore the spirit. It’s certainly useful from the point of a reviewer as it enables me to identify some of the nuances and flavours. J. Wray & Nephew Limited is a subsidiary of the Campari Group, a major player in the global branded beverage industry, with a portfolio of over 50 premium and super premium brands marketed and distributed in over 190 countries worldwide. Established in 1825, J. Wray & Nephew Limited is the oldest company in Jamaica and one of the largest exporters in the Caribbean, with its products going to over 60 countries around the world. The Company has Jamaica’s largest wine and spirits portfolio, comprising a number of owned and represented brands including the iconic Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum and Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum. J. Wray & Nephew Limited’s principal operations include the distillation of rum and other spirits; the ageing, blending and bottling of rum; the production of wines and other alcoholic beverages and the marketing, sales and distribution of the Company’s brands as well all non-owned brands that are represented by the Company in Jamaica. Trois Rivières white rums are an absolute reference. They are smooth with a balanced body and an amazing aromatic array with vegetal, mineral and sea-water notes.

The Plantation benefits from an exceptional terroir that retains all the wealth and flavor from the sugarcane and gives Trois Rivières’ rums their character and their rich flavors: over 1,700 acres of land, gently stroked by trade winds, overlook the sparkling sea in the sunniest, far-South part of the island. For those who do not know J Wray and Nephew are also responsible for the Appleton Estate line of rums. I have found that in comparison to rums from Hampden and Monymusk their Appleton Estate rums are quite refined by Jamaican standards. Looking at this bottle I am not expecting the refined sophistication of those rums! J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. is a distiller, blender, and bottler of rum, originating and operating in Jamaica.

Good for ghosts?

The infamous Wray and Nephew White Overproof rum has been available in the UK via Tesco for some years now. I imagine this is due to its huge popularity in Jamaica where it counts for 90% of all rum sales.

W&N Overproof is an unaged pot and column distilled rum. As it has Jamaican pot still rum in the mix I am expecting to get something a little “funky”. Many white rums are rectified so much that they are almost flavourless and vodka like. Hopefully this will be better. The history of J. Wray and Nephew began in 1825 when company founder John Wray opened 'The Shakespeare Tavern' in Kingston, Jamaica. Kingston grew steadily and eventually became Jamaica's capital in 1877, and The Shakespeare Tavern became highly successful. The harvest of myrtle begins in November, a centuries-old, unique and precious tradition - like its homeland, Sardinia - which is renewed year after year to create Mirto Zedda Piras. The typical Sardinian liqueur is obtained exclusively from fresh Sardinian myrtle berries, harvested by skilled hands who know the impervious places of the island, where this spontaneous shrub grows, the fruit of which ripens inland and along the sunny and windy coasts of the island, exclusively on wild shrubs. Despite this I wouldn’t really look to drink this on its own (even with water) it’s not bad but its youth means it still has a lot of rough edges and has a little bit too much burn to really enjoy as a sipper. Dry Edition is a dry sparkling wine, produced through a natural fermentation process. It is characterised by a fresh and pleasing perfume and a slightly fruity, balanced and enjoyable flavour.

Born in Martinique in the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean Sea, Trois Rivières’ Rhum Agricole is distilled from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice. It is said that 90% of rum sales in Jamaica are of this famous brand, used in Jamaican rum punches, Mai Tais and daiquiris. [5] Upon the initiative of its former Director Mr. Bourdillon, Maison La Mauny contributed to the recognition of the Martinican terroir and rum-making process so that it also acquired the AOC label, a true guarantee of quality and authenticity. In the past and nowadays, Maison La Mauny premium agricole rums have always been renowned for their quality and are awarded the most prestigious medals at International Rums Competitions. In strict accordance of AOC standards, our amber rums are matured for over 12 months in large-capacity oak tuns. Slowly and very gradually reduced to 40%, these few months spent in wood impart a superb golden, luminous hue to these delicate rums. Created by Angelo Dalle Molle, a Venetian entrepreneur and philanthropist, Cynar was launched in Italy in 1952. Since then, the brand has grown and is now distributed internationally.

Yes, Wray and Nephew can be consumed straight, but its strong profile means it’s often mixed in drinks. What should I mix with Wray and Nephew? The award winning Cabo Wabo Tequila shines with smooth, authentic flavour and unique personality; it is created with respect of the long-standing tequila traditions that made it the drink of choice of the wise and venerated mystics of Mexico. No shortcuts are taken in making Cabo Wabo, unlike other brands which legally mix up to 49% of fillers and still call their product "tequila". Their taste qualities are particularly smooth: midway between the freshness and bracing effect of white rums and the fullness and complexity of our famous aged rums. Our aged rums are matured for a minimum of 3 years and up to 20 years in oak casks of various origins: new French casks, former Cognac casks from France and former Bourbon casks from the US. Most of Maison La Mauny aged rums are made by blending various types to obtain the finest balance and enhanced aromatic richness. The best rum for your rum punch is the famous Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum and Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, which are used in this recipe. True pioneer from the very start, Maison La Mauny combines know-how and creativity to develop new recipes that are always more attractive and bottles an elixir of conviviality, typical of Martinique. Sainsbury's Superior Dark Rum (Gold medal winner in the Rum category at the 2010 International Wine and Spirit Awards [6]) Robust, sweet with primary savours of sugarcane, they reflect the generous climate of Southern Martinique and its unique terroir. Exuberant and appealing, the whites convey powerful notes of flowers and fruit with expressive fresh sugarcane juice aromas. This unique style comes from a rigorous selection of our sugarcanes, crushed within 24 hours of their harvest, and a careful distillation that complies with the pure traditional method in Creole columns, among which one is copper.
