Syringe feeding is not a quick fix – it is ‘supportive nursing’ to be used alongside veterinary treatment and medication. To help a sick rabbit recover from their illness, you may have to force feed them Critical Care with a syringe. Therefore, it is important that when providing critical care nutrition, the chosen diet is provided in sufficient quantities. The consistency can be altered to suit the method of feeding and the rabbit’s preference, and each brand will have feeding directions on the packet.

You should avoid giving your rabbit the entire daily amount of Critical Care formula in one feeding session.

The required amount of Critical Care (CC) for each animal depends on several factors, such as animal type, age, weight, and clinical condition. Slow gut motility, triggered by stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, inhibits activity of the gastrointestinal tract and reduces gut motility. For example, carbonic anhydrase is absent from the thick ascending limb of the renal tubule of rabbits, whereas in other species carbonic anhydrase is present in large amounts in the ascending tubule epithelial cells. Both bedding hay and grass hay, and additionally alfalfa, can be kept in the hospital, as well as several different options for syringe feeding ( Pollock, 2011) ( Table 1 and Figure 2).To get it faster you can upgrade Light items to Royal Mail 1st Class Tracked or a Guaranteed Courier service, Saturday Courier or even before 12 noon services where available. It is also important to understand the anatomy of the patients in practice, and providing them with the correct nutrition is essential from the offset.
