The guided tourlast approximately1 hour, followed by the opportunity to explore the Egyptian Exhibition. You will then be invited to the Christmas Marquee for Afternoon Tea lasting 45 minutes. Following this, you may enjoy the Gift Shop and Gardens at your leisure. We kindly ask Group C to explore the Gardens and Gift Shop earlier before your tour and tea as the sun sets early in the day. The exit drive was brilliant, it takes you out via another entrance so you get to see more of the estate. Your tour will be followed by a Champagne Afternoon Tea in our Tearooms served by our very own butler, Luis, and his team.

Note: Extra-fine sugar is often labeled superfine sugar. If you can't find it, substitute regular granulated white sugar. In 1793, Colonel Henry Herbert was created the 1st Earl of Carnarvon by King George III.Tocelebrate, he decided to build an imposing entrance, London Lodge, to his beautiful Park atHighclere. Wehave now completely restored this building and have refurbished it asa charming Lodge in which to stay fortwo nights. (It has two wings including one double bedroom). Those elaborate tea services remain a part of daily life for British aristocracy, according to one-time royal chef Darren McGrady.Gosh, we should have come ages ago, what a place! It's a beautiful building and was a joy to see the rooms which we were familiar with from the series. The grounds are just awesome although it was a shame the rain came just as we were exiting the house so were unable to explore. The term reflects how the tea is taken at high chairs around a table instead of in a parlor where traditional afternoon tea is served.

Cream, then jam on scones? —This depends. Devon tradition puts clotted cream first on scones, then jam. In Cornwall, preserves first. Eat with fingers neatly. McGrady, who chronicles his time in the royal kitchens in the 2007 cookbook Eating Royally, said kitchen staff members prepared scones for Queen Elizabeth II's daily afternoon tea, including raisins in the recipe every other day. Completing the tea service are small sandwiches, always with the crusts trimmed from the bread, he said. Please remember to collect your book from the Castle Gift Shop during your visit, as we will be unable to post this after you have departed. Your tour will begin in the warmth of the Saloon at the heart of the Castle. Our guides will take you through the State Rooms where you can enjoy hearing about the history of the Castle and the works of art, as well as anecdotes from the filming.Milk goes in after tea — a nice little saying: “To put milk in your tea before sugar is to cross the path of love, perhaps never to marry.” (Tea superstition)
