About this deal

You also have to be careful to take into account a certain degree of "grumpiness" about the Panasonic 100-400mm that may or may not affect how users of one or the other of the lenses review them. At the 100mm end of the zoom range, the lens has a diagonal angle of view of 12°, equivalent to that of a 200mm lens in a 35mm system.

Thanks Doug. I am also waiting for the 150-400 but it will be a long wait.. As I have nice photography trip planned next month I want to have the best I can have for any birding and wildlife opportunities. Of course if the 150-400 arrives in time the problem will be solved. The lens is both dust- and moisture-resistant, an excellent feature given that this lens will predominantly be used by wildlife and sports photographers in all kinds of conditions. It also has a shallow sliding built-in hood, with a somewhat impractical clamp-on extension. The OM System/Olympus lens has a smoother zoom ring, a conventional hood (which incidentally also fits the firm’s 40-150mm f/2.8 zoom), and will attach directly to many tripod heads thanks to its Arca Swiss-compatible mount. With a close focus distance of 1.3m across throughout the entire focal range, the lens adds a telemacro feather to its cap. The ability to combine telephoto and macro shooting makes the Olympus 100-400mm more versatile than its super tele zoom capabilities might suggest. The 100-400m lens features built-in image stabilisation worth 3 stops to help to combat camera shake, while 9 circular diaphragm blades give the aperture a rounded shape.

It has a close focusing distance of 1.3m across the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.57x. I know I am not taking this seriously? Well it's a pointless question to be honest, there is NOTHING wrong with it as it wouldn't have been released! There is no downside apart from the obvious that's more money than most of you expected (covered above). Spanning an impressive super telephoto range, this 100-400mm zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 200-800mm equivalent focal length range.

It can be used with the MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters to give a maximum focal length of 1120mm and 1600mm The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS is a brand new 4x telephoto superzoom lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. Chromatic aberration (CA) is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software. Telephoto lenses, at the best of times, can be a challenge to use. Super telephoto zooms can be even harder to get under control, especially at the long end due to the very narrow viewing angle they produce and just how much vibration is amplified at such long focal lengths. However, I have to say, the image stabilization in the Olympus 100-400mm f5-6.3 IS is excellent, and it does make this lens easy to handhold, even at 800mm equivalent lengths. At 200mm, the centre is very good from f/6 to f/16 and fair at f/22. The edges are very good at f/6 and f/8, good at f/11 and f/16 and fair at f/22.
