I adore Xie Lian and Huang Chen and I think that they complement one another perfectly, like yin and yang. I loved how this story took almost all the batshit things from the previous volumes and turn it up a hundred! My favourite things about this volume: Hua Cheng being his gremlin self, Quan Yizhen and Yin Yu's backstory, Quan Yizhen confirmed neurodivergent, the Rain Master's epic entrance, the very brief fengqing moment at the beginning, Qi Rong trying to be a good dad, and of course my favourite, Pei Ming being left to die by the others several times.

He's serene and fearless and can handle himself, but Cheng seems to think he's a precious cinnamon roll who shouldn't ever have to lift a finger to do anything for himself.The Windmaster is still missing, Ling Wen has escaped with the Brocade Demon, and the monks who want to kill Hua Cheng are racing after Xie Lian and San Lang. In the middle it started dragging a little bit because I had a feeeling eveything is happening so slow and that the story just doesn't make any progress at all. In the first book in the series, Banyue and Pei Xiu — the now mortal descendant of the martial god Pei Ming — found themselves in Mount Tonglu, and in this book we learn more about Pei Ming himself. Xie Lian is sent to secretly infiltrate and try to prevent this–by destroying any ghosts strong enough to stand a chance.
