About this deal

Following the march and the violence of Cable Street, politicians and officials looked at ways to reduce the likelihood of such events being repeated. The six essays collected in this volume are a selection from a number of papers which were given at a one-day colloquium on 'Art, Literature and the Spanish Civil War' which was held in Westfield College on 18 July 1986, preciselyfifty years to the day after Franco's military coup in the Canary Islands, which was destined to have such a decisive effect on the course of Spanish history. The event has developed an almost mythic status in some circles, representing the East End’s clear rejection of fascism, and is celebrated with a plaque and the mural on walls along Cable Street. Frank Graham was later an important publisher on Tyneside, championing amongst other things the works of Jack Common.

Focusing on how we got here as it pertains to fascism and white supremacy, along with what we can do about it, from a diverse cross-section of people who are directly doing the work, this book is a vital read for activists, journalists, and academics alike.Suddenly, the horses' hooves were flying and the horses were falling down because the young kids were throwing marbles. The small concession by the British government was to allow the placement of refugee children (known as Basque refugees, though some were from non-Basque regions) in Britain for the duration of the war.

Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis is a much-needed collection of essays from some of the most notable anti-fascists writing today. The Spanish Civil War is a period that is not so well covered as others in historical miniatures, and even less in busts! Image: PHM How are these stories of British individuals told in People’s History Museum collections? On Sunday 4 October 1936 a march through East London led by Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists (BUF) was disrupted by anti-fascist counter demonstrators. Today there are still mass graves being uncovered and Franco’s burial tomb is a source of heated controversy.
