The new Lord Onslow and his wife Violet Onslow (née Bampfylde) were keen to support the war effort and so converted Clandon into a military hospital. André George(s) Louis Onslow (27 July 1784 – 3 October 1853) was a French composer of English descent. His wealth, position and personal tastes allowed him to pursue a path unfamiliar to most of his French contemporaries, more similar to that of his contemporary German romantic composers; his music also had a strong following in Germany and in England. His principal output was chamber music, but he also wrote four symphonies and four operas. Onslow was esteemed by critics of his time, but his reputation declined swiftly after his death. It has only been revived in recent years. As an adult, Huia studied at Cambridge and went on to make important discoveries in the field of genetics. Sadly, he died at 31 years old, due to health complications following a diving accident in 1911. The First World War Weston, Alan (5 August 2010). "Geoffrey Hughes career on stage, TV and screen". In 1832–33, when Britain was on the verge of the abolition of slavery, Arthur sold the Onslow family plantation in Jamaica. It was sold to Charles Orlando Hodgson, who lived in the Guildford area. On the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Edward and his growing family lived in a château in Clermont-Ferrand in central France. The revolution only brought them more trouble. Edward on the run A mislaid deeds paper left by the forgetful old Lord would supposedly clarify who has rights to the estate, buried somewhere in the gardens that Onslow is left to ineptly try and keep in shape. Most of the conflict would have come from the Lord's brother and the manor's snooty neighbours, the wealthy Hyde-Whytes, who are not happy about the "commoners" who have taken up residence next door (although it later transpires that Mr. Hyde-Whyte used to know Onslow in their youth and is indebted to him after Onslow once took the fall for him to stop him being arrested). Su Pollard was approached to play the role of Miss Dorothy "Dotty" Henshaw, the Lord's eccentric and easily flustered cook/housekeeper who remains with the estate, and some preliminary location shooting was reportedly undertaken. This proposed spin-off series was ultimately not commissioned. Clandon Park was inherited by Sir Richard Onslow, who had married the heiress Elizabeth Tulse. She was the daughter of Sir Henry Tulse, the Lord Mayor of London. In 1842 Onslow's wealth increased on the death of his father-in-law, who owned extensive property. In the same year his French musical prestige was consolidated when he succeeded Luigi Cherubini as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. [1] Invited to the Aachen music festival in 1846, in the following year, on what may have been his last journey outside France, Onslow conducted his Fourth Symphony in Cologne, at the Niederrheinisches Musikfest. [5] During his last years he wrote a number of pieces for large chamber ensemble with piano, including quintets, a sextet (Op. 77b) and a septet (Op. 79); he also wrote a nonet (op. 77a) for strings and woodwind. [15] Onslow died unexpectedly (although after a period of declining health) in Clermont-Ferrand in 1853, after taking a morning walk. His son, the third Baron, represented Guildford in Parliament and served as Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. He was heirless on his death in 1776.

Hughes was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the 1990s and in 2010 he suffered a relapse which led him to retire from acting. He died from the illness, aged 68, in 2012. Throughout the series, Onslow is unemployed and makes his income betting on horses. The show never mentions what his career is, nor if he may be retired, laid off, or fired from a job.

Arthur was the third member of the family to hold this position and served for a record-breaking 33 years in five successive parliaments, for which he was given the name the ‘Great Speaker’. He remains the longest-serving Speaker in British history. George Earl of Onslow After his wife Mary, to whom he was devoted, died in 1830, he moved from Surrey to Richmond.
