About this deal

The 2009 novel The Horse Dancer by Jojo Moyes, the bestselling author of Me Before You and two-time winner of the RNA Novel of the Year award. Whilst Cowboy John is a friend who makes allowances, Maltese Sal is someone far more sinister and unyielding and it would not be beyond him to take advantage of this situation and the fears of a young girl. There are a few continuity issues throughout the book and it gets a bit predictable towards the end but because of the ending, it is still satisfying.

Meanwhile Natasha a children’s lawyer, along with her husband Mac of whom she recently separated from crosses paths with Sarah after her grand father had fallen ill and ends up taking her under her wing. I was lucky enough to have lessons with well known Classical Dressage instructor – and what JoJo has captured is so true and correct. I started listening to books rather than reading as I found I just didn’t ever have the time or the inclination to sit and read anymore.Henri teaches Boo and Sarah how to defy gravity as he did in France so many years ago and dreams that one day Sarah will be able to live the life he couldn’t—as an écuyer at Le Cadre Noir. In the midst of wondering what to do about her charming ex-husband, she reads on someone else’s newspaper that one of the children she defended in court has committed a violent crime. But I was so disappointed with this book, it is a far cry from the other 8 books of hers I have read. But Natasha, the lawyer who becomes accidentally involved in Sarah's life to the point of totally upending her own? She’s evoked emotions and memories and also made me question how far I would go to ensure my horse was safe.

In a stable under railway arches, lives Boo, a Selle Francais he bought as a colt for Sarah; together they train him and he gives them purpose. I did enjoy the story of Natasha and Mac but it only started getting really interesting when Sarah entered their lives.Anyone who is a regular visitor to and reader of my blog will know that I have a liking of Jojo Moyes’ books.

It’s a story of a 14 year old girl (Sarah) whose grandfather (Henri) was in the highly acclaimed ‘Cadre Noir’ French classical riding academy. Told with Moyes' signature heart and memorable characters, this book will drag your heart through the mud and leave you with hope and happiness. Sarah is a beautifully drawn character that I instantly felt so much for, especially when her situation in life becomes so dire that she is forced into making drastic and potentially life-altering decisions. Elite equestrian Henri Lachapelle is about to enter the arena to prove to all of France that he is still destined to become one of Le Cadre Noir’s top riders. She made the words leap from the pages, creating vivid images of setting, the quirky folks in Henri and Sarah’s world and, of course Boo. I certainly didn't anticipate enjoying this novel as much as I did and I think fans of Jojo Moyes work will feel the same.

Henri has been trying to train Sarah in the basics of dressage, an equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation as “the highest expression of horse training” in which “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements. At first I was not sure there really was such a thing as Le Cadre Noir, but sure enough there is, and I was surprised that I had never heard of it before reading this book. With each perceived “failure,” Natasha judges herself harshly, and projects that judgment onto others, letting those negative perceptions color her relationships. My story isn’t the same as Mecca or Sarah, but many of my weekends were spent helping out at my local riding school.

Mac and Natasha know nothing about her horse nor her financial worries as Sarah tells them nothing about Boo and with no money of her own for his upkeep and care, Sarah is in a precarious situation. There was also some strange flashbacks to the Grandfather as a prologue and again later in the book that I felt unnecessary. As someone who has horses featuring largely within my own life, I don't always enjoy reading books about horses or with horses featured, mainly because lack of knowledge, and therefore incorrect content, on the authors part annoys the heck out of me!
