Instructions

He witnessed a parade of jesters and madmen (fools called ‘zotten’). Afterwards, the citizens of Bruges asked the Emperor for a ‘zothuis’ (or madhouse). Whereupon he responded: “A madhouse is all I have seen today.” Brugse Zot comes in two forms, with the Blond as its flagship, and a Dubbel rounding things out. Quintessentially Belgian, the beer has a big body, with fruity banana notes from the yeast blended with complimentary hops. Secondary fermentation in the bottle leads to a long maturation process and a soft carbonation. It’s a beer that gets better and better. There are taste impressions of malt and bread, lemon and herbs. The carbon dioxide gives a taste explosion in the mouth. There is a pleasant bitterness and a dry finish. Brugse Zot popularity has grown over the years due to its refreshing taste and unique character. This character has come about due to it being brewed with four different types of malts and two types of aroma hops. The finished product is full bodied with a sweet malt character which is nicely balanced with fruit tones and is followed with a crisp and clean finish.

Brugse Zot is one of only two kinds of beer that is still brewed in the historical centre of Bruges, which makes it pretty special. Na een grondige renovatie en modernisering van de brouwinstallatie werd Brouwerij De Halve Maan in 2005 heropgestart en werd het bier Brugse Zot gelanceerd. For many centuries, the people of Bruges have been known to their Flemish neighbours, as “Bruges Fools”. How did they get this name? A couple explanations run around today. The most prevalent is that Emperor Maximilian of Austria, who had acquired Flanders through his marriage to Mary of Burgundy, was staying in Bruges at the end of the 15th century to watch the famous yearly Holy Blood Procession. The day after, the citizens of Bruges asked him to sponsor the creation of a ‘fools house’, an institution for mental illness. The emperor responded’“ Just close the city gates. Bruges is one big fools’ house! ” During the procession the day before, he had seen the burghers of Bruges jumping and fooling around. The procession is a lot of fun, and the most festive day of Bruges.
