About this deal

There are much better reviews which sum up the notes, but my 2 cents: Soapy aldehyde opening with brief citrus, quickly revealing the base notes of gentle leather, labdanum, light sweetness and green moss. I need to spend a little more time with Cabochard, but I feel Devin is bit more timeless somehow, while Cabochard does feel a bit stuck in the past due to old school feeling aldehydes and florals. Used in the right amounts and as part of a complementary olfactory pyramid, such as in the 1981 version of the animalic green masterpiece Jules by Dior, galbanum works well, but here it is one-dimensional and whilst longevity is very good at over 8 hours, it is not the type of green scent I could ever learn to love. Devin brings to mind a cloudy day in spring, just after the rain; when the leaden sky makes the new growth look fluorescent green by contrast. Add me to the list of people who find hints of other classic masculines in Devin Country Cologne, namely Yatagan and Halston Z14, with two parts of the former juxtaposed against one part the latter.

Also I was recently complimented on my "drover style"--full-length cowboy-friendly coat, distressed leather fedora, etc. These gradually fade, making way for middle notes of carnation, cinnamon, jasmine, caraway and pine. The dominant notes are the leather and the beautiful galbanum, although the accompanying lighter florals do much to soften it.In terms of other fragrances that Devins resembles, I'd say something along the lines of Dior Eau Sauvage, Maison Margiela Jazz Club and By the Fireplace. As it develops it leaves behind the light touch of citrus, flowers and spices, and then it feels like Devin is growing up before our eyes and becoming a man. The crisp blend of green notes with bright citrus accents blended with rich spices, sensuous wood and amber creates an aristocratic and relaxed fragrance; perfect for the man who wants to feel fresh and unhurried. The more you wear Devin, the more you come to understand and appreciate its "Country Cologne" designation in the context of 1970s sensibilities.

I smell a lot of fatty, clean aldehydes at first mixed in with a strong catholic church incense smell, literally smells like a priest's robe to me. it settles down and the carnation and others flowers start coming in all the way until the dry down making it a kind of green/floral. You can smell easily what this has in common with two of his other most famous chypres from this line also designed by the legendary Chant: the original Aramis by Aramis, and the lovely rose-leather chypre Amaris 900. As with so many fragrances of the era, restrictions to materials imposed by IFRA have resulted in a lack of depth and staying power. Other than that, the marketing blurb captures it just right: "Aramis Devin Eau de Cologne Spray is a rich, sophisticated fragrance that captures the relaxed, unhurried attitude of the country life".My recent purchase from Notino, on the other hand, is a shockingly flat, lifeless and synthetic version of this former masterwork. We do know that pine and artemisia were often paired together in men's chypres of the day (Quorum and the like), but here, they really somehow stand out as Technicolor, albeit with many muted and tawny shades thrown in. This gives modern day Devin, a far cry from the Dude of the late 1970s that he once was, a cheap feel and some would say, diminishes the legacy of a classic Aramis creation.
