About this deal

Together with boyfriend Marcus and dangerously attractive (to Steven), American friend Troy, they start to investigate. There is a reason why this town is so miserable and why Steven is not the only one with powers. The origins of both are in some nasty eugenics experimentation. This is a gripping, pacy plot with laugh-out-loud dialogue, real emotional heart, diverse representation and some very likeable, and not so likeable, characters. Another fave was rookie Agent Wren, whose enthusiasm leads to more than one awkward (but highly entertaining) conversation with her supervisor—trust me, it’s pretty much impossible not to find her antics a little amusing. However, having said all that, I realised while reading the book that it had very little uniqueness to it and that kinda took away from the reading experience for me personally. If I put aside the similarities for a second, it is a pretty decent book! The stakes were also higher than the other books and kept me hooked to the story, which was a very interesting aspect, considering it's a YA book. And a DEBUT 😮

Overemotional (David Fenne) – Book Review – Set The Tape

I find Steven’s voice the easiest because he’s the most similar to me, but I love Troy. He’s so earnest, polite, and optimistic in everything he does, and his fish-out-of-water point of view (being an American in the UK) is a great comedic vein to mine. He’s such a golden retriever that you can’t help but love him. Summary: Steven, an unfortunate and secretive sixth former who possesses a unique and dangerous ability. Whenever he experiences intense emotions, whether they be joy or sorrow, inexplicable and potentially perilous events occur. After one such incident took place he is filled with guilt and fear of causing harm to others, seeking refuge in the desolate town of Grunsby-on-Sea, determined to protect those around him from the destructive power of his Emomancy. With a best friend as determined as Freya, it is impossible to stay hidden for long, especially when she realises Steven might be in danger after a mysterious organisation called DEMA start asking questions about him. Where Freya goes, her boyfriend Marcus and American friend Troy soon follow. Together, they are determined to find out more about this organisation. In a serendipitous encounter, Steven crosses paths with an alluring enigma who not only professes to possess the same extraordinary abilities as him but also extends an enticing proposition to guide Steven in mastering his latent powers. Steven is an “emomancer” – an individual whose emotions manifest in superpowers – his happiness creates thunderstorms, and his sadness and anger manifest fear in those around him. To protect those around him, Steven closes in on himself, hiding away from the world. His best friend Freya is having none of it, however, chasing him out to Grunsby to bring him home, bringing her car-obsessed boyfriend Marcus, and his handsome new American friend, Troy, with her. Despite his attempts to conceal his powers, it’s not long before Freya finds out about them. Freya’s not the only person Steven has to worry about, however. Hey did you hear? Steven Percival is a low-budget superhero who might kill you if he laughs too hard."The concept of the powers came first. I had been rolling the idea around in my head based on conversations I’d had with my husband about how his anxiety manifests. I thought emotion-based powers were an interesting concept to explore, but they would just result in someone just trying to be happy. So I thought, “What if it were reversed?” What would the pursuit of misery do to a person? Almost immediately, Steven’s voice began to form in my head.

But Grunsby isn't as dead as it first seems. And when his best friend Freya turns up (unimpressed at his sudden departure) and the two are chased round the town by a mysterious women trying to accost them, they realise Steven could be in grave danger; fears made more real when Freya's boyfriend reports a stranger from DEMA has been snooping around enquiring about Steven. As Steven and Freya investigate who or what is looking for him, a chance encounter with a stranger with similar powers to his who offers to help could be the answer to Steven's predicament. Despite Freya's warnings, emotions may cost Steven his life and that of his friends.Personally I would like it if this book was turned into a TV Show. If it ever does I would definitely go and watch it. I am anticipating the opportunity to revisit this book upon its release and intend to acquire both a physical copy and an audible version to fully immerse myself in the story. To avoid hurting anyone else, Steven runs away from school to hide in the miserable town of Grunsby-on-Sea. But all that changes when his friends turn up on his doorstep, determined to bring him home. Not to mention the secretive agency that seems to be following him wherever he goes.” Seventeen-year-old Steven has a big problem... Whenever he feels intense emotions, weird things happen. Like when he kissed a boy for the first time, and the boy's head literally exploded. I do find the descriptions a little much, however that’s probably because the author needs to illustrate the layout of his story. I tend to not read the synopsis before I read a book, however I found the last chapter just about wrap it up and thought to myself whether David was giving himself room for a sequel. Then I read the blurb and found out this is the 1st of a trilogy.

Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing -As exciting and interesting as the synopsis was for this, I'm afraid I didn't love it as much as I would've wanted to. It was not horrible by any means-quite far from that. Edit: I haven't stopped thinking about this book so it's gone up .5 a star to perfection :) stay mad Seventeen-year-old Steven has a big problem… Whenever he feels intense emotions, weird things happen. Like when he kissed a boy for the first time, and the boy’s head literally exploded. The book reads from the main characters points of view so you really get to know them quite well. I enjoyed Steven and Troy but I found Freya irritating in parts. For me, the way I felt towards the characters only shows the skill of David Fenne's depth of character development writing.
