The self-noise is present but not terrible. It's no Sony D100, at least with the onboard mics. Maybe with very sensitive externals, the situation would improve, I haven't tried that yet, as nature ambience isn't my primary use case.

Physically the new model looks much as before, with three microphones at the front, a small square dot matrix display, and the same button layout. Its Tresmic II system provides zoomable stereo output, ranging from a wide 180° soundstage to focusing narrowly in front of the device, shotgun-style. You can record in qualities up to 96KHz / 24-bit, using either the lossy MP3 format, lossless compressed FLAC, or uncompressed WAV.Speaking of that, I've found the card slot slightly hit and miss. When that happens, it switches to internal recording. This works fine (it has a usable 16GB of internal flash, I think) but it can give you a scary moment when you pop the card out and don't find any of your recordings. In the box with the review unit were two rechargeable Ni‑MAAA batteries, a multilingual Basic Manual and a micro USB to USB‑A 2.0 adaptor. The LS‑P4 used only one battery, and the idea here is to allow longer running time when using Bluetooth (and longer still when not). The LS-P5 has both Slate Tone and Test Tone available when used as a camera microphone. Slate Tone sends a reference signal to your digital camera for easier editing, while Test Tone enables you to set the camera audio recording levels. Multiple intelligent recording modes are available, including Auto, Manual and Smart recording modes. Each can be used for creating a customised sound recording The Intelligent Auto mode can automatically adjust sound levels dynamically, while the Manual mode allows for fine-tuning of the recording levels to match the audio source volume. Smart recording assists in achieving the optimum sound level, this is set by listening to the environment before recording. A long press of the red Record button enters Smart mode, in which the LS‑P5 will automatically set the preamp gain for you.Bluetooth connectivity isn’t new per se, but it’s improved: the LS‑P5 has Version 5.0 support, which in lay terms means it now allows both headphone and app connection at the same time, which previously was not possible.
