About this deal

Growing bags don't compare - these used to be filled with peat and were cheap, making them an excellent alternative. Proven over years as the standard choice, it perfectly nurtures acid-loving plants like Heather, Rhododendrons, Camellia, and Pieris. Ericaceous compost is used for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and heathers when you grow them in pots. Unfortunately, there are some areas that we are unable to deliver to including Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man, The Isle of Wight, Scottish Isles and The Channel Isles. Our advisers are there, not only at the outset, but provide advice continually throughout the growing season, making sure that you maximise your crops’ quality and profitability.

The right balance of nutrients - a good seed or potting compost should have the right balance of nutrients to grow a range of plants during this stage of their development, whereas a multipurpose compost should be able to support plants at all growth stages. As soon as the growth of your plants slows down, start to give them a liquid feed, including seedlings and small young plants. It’s totally organic, peat-free, and made from coconut coir, which makes it pet- and child-friendly, but the best part is that 20 litres of compost arrives at your doorstep in a package measuring just 18 x 18 x 8cm.

With its traditional mix of loam, peat and grit, Levington Peat FreeEricaceous Compost with added John Innesprovides the perfect structure for your plants roots, feeding for 6 weeks. There have been also some issues with compost bricks not expanding to the full amount described, but it seems to be related to the water temperature used –just make sure it’s lukewarm or warmer. We can't recommend reformulated brands because there's no guarantee the new product will perform as well as the one we tested. When the seedlings are ready to be transplanted into individual pots, take care to handle them by the leaves and not the stems or rods. Osmocote controlled release fertilisers are designed to nurture your plants to their fullest potential. Ideal for final potting of ericaceous or acid loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons or heathers. Seed compost is designed to provide the low levels of nutrients needed at the early stages of a plant’s life and can contain additional ingredients that aid germination.

Storing Levington Peat FreeEricaceous Compost with added John Innes from one year to another may result in the fertiliser ratios becoming unbalanced. There’s a high loam content in this compost, as well as added vermiculite to help retain moisture around each seed. Backed by cutting-edge technical products such as Osmocote controlled release fertilisers, this package is seamlessly integrated with the choice of Levington Advance (peat-based) and Levington Advance Sustain (peat-free) growing media. Organic compost only contains plant matter and animal products – which could be animal manure, fish blood or bone – while non-organic compost may also include manufactured materials such as perlite, vermiculite or rockwool to aid with drainage and water absorption. These include small amounts of sand, grit or vermiculite in seed and potting composts, bark in orchid compost and mostly gravel and sand in cacti composts.Formulated to optimise plant growth by providing the right conditions to suit the plant at a particular stage in its life, or for certain types of plants such as orchids, cacti or ericaceous plants. ICL has (under various guises) supplied growing media to the UK horticulture market for over 50 years. The bacterium responsible for the potentially fatal Legionnaires’ disease has been found in some composts sold in the UK. Professional growing media in ornamental horticulture are specialised substrate blends designed for optimal plant growth, often used in controlled environments like nurseries.

Part fill the hole with a mixture of 50% soil and 50% Levington Multi Purpose Compost with added John Innes. We have also included Moorland Gold composts which use peat recovered from lakes and dams after being naturally washed from peat heathland by rainwater. Dry, clean bags that aren't torn or faded - in the garden centre choose bags that look new as the contents contain fresh compost. Peat is also sourced from peat bogs in the UK and Ireland: these are important habitats for local flora and fauna and are becoming depleted to a critical level. To rehydrate the whole pack of compost, you simply cut open at the top of the bag, add seven litres of lukewarm water and wait for five minutes until the compost has sufficiently absorbed all the water.
