About this deal

None of these guys are professional reviewers or employees of TEMPO - they're amateur runners of different abilities, and their comments are below. I ran on dirt and gravel with the Rebel v3 and the thin outsole and soft midsole don’t offer much protection for larger rocks, but the shoes are so flexible and light that it didn’t bother me.

The shoe does not have quite as much sole flaring as some other New Balance models, but does have some flaring noted in the forefoot on both sides and the heel medially.I agree with Jacob: if you can find the Rebel v2 at a discount, you aren’t missing any dramatic improvement with the Rebel v3. I ran in the first version of this shoe in college and found that even though they were lightweight, the foam felt pretty dense,” one reviewer says.

I have been waiting for the New Balance Fuelcell Rebel 2 shoe for what seems like forever (is that a common theme with my shoe reviews? The Rebel 2 can both do as advertised and help you nail your speed days and workouts, but also bounce along comfortably for easy days. I’ve run about 100 miles in the New Balance Fuelcell Rebel 2, and while I don’t see any major signs of wear, I worry I won’t get 300-400 miles in them. The v3 outsole no longer has the triangle shaped pattern, although the outsole material is still soft.

For me, on the run, the difference is not notable, but I think it creates a slightly friendlier ride and increases versatility without a notable increase in weight. more FuelCell foam height, 3mm more width at the forefoot, 5mm less width at the midfoot and the same heel width. There are some sidewalls through the midfoot and sole flaring in the forefoot which do help with some stabilization of the soft platform. The design of the upper looks a little more “traditional” now and reminds me of the 880v12 I previously tested, which is a bit of a shame. Finally, I think that some of the flaring (and the ribbing) present could be pulled back a bit, ever so slightly, so that it affects the foot even less when moving forward during the gait cycle. Normally I am hyper-critical and need to poke and prod to find the smallest details that I don’t like about a shoe but I’m going to struggle with my modus operandi on the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2. As far as fit, the NB Fuelcell Rebel 2 fits true to size in length, but it is more narrow than the first version.

They aren’t the fastest shoes I have, but they still have speed and a lot of comfort which help in feeling a little fresher post workout. Like the midsole foam, the rubber on the outsole is also super soft so the shoe flexes easily and freely up in the forefoot. In spite of the slightly higher stack, wider forefoot and narrower midfoot, the Rebel 3 doesn’t feel very different underfoot. Lightweight, Cushioning (more at midfoot but not at heel), responsive (bouncy) at midfoot and make you pushed forward, fast and nimble. The thin mesh upper is almost see-through and lets heat and vapour escape easily all around the foot.
