About this deal

When it comes to sitting down to actually play Magical Kitties Save The Day, my kids had a great time just making their Kitties. They also loved looking over the River City map and catching small details like the fact that there’s a game store in the Town Square. The elegantly simply rules system puts the emphasis on storytelling and supports a setting and characters that players are familiar with and love from the start. In the character section, I mentioned that there were attributes (cunning, fierce, and cute) that you assigned either a 1, 2, or 3 to. Those numbers reflect how many dice you get to roll when you use that skill. The final sections of the books give you details of foes and disasters that you can slot into these adventure recipes.

But I wanted to do more than just print a copy of the game as it already existed: Not only had we all learned a lot from running and playing the game, we also had the opportunity to create a truly unique game for all-ages that would not only introduce roleplaying games to new players, but also teach new players how to become game masters for the first time. Second, we wanted the game to only use six-sided dice. I’m a big fan of the polyhedrons, but limiting the dice to just one type would (a) allow us to provide dice in the boxed set for a relatively low cost (so we could invest more in other features) and (b) provide a more familiar experience to players in our core target audience six to twelve year-olds. If you’ve been looking for a way to introduce your friends and family to roleplaying games, Magical Kitties is the perfect game to do it! You are cute. You are cunning. You are fierce. You are magical kitties who can save the day! That’s how this RPG in a box begins, and also how it has continued – such a cute mantra has now invaded daily life and has been repeated regularly since starting to play this game. Gone away are the range of dice, the requirement to roll for an extensive number of options, and lengthy character sheets, instead, here stands Magical Kitties Save The Day, with six D6, and requirements to roll only for actions that fall under cute, cunning, or fierce. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, you are a magical kitty who owns a human. (Some humans believe that they own the kitties… This is clearly ridiculous.) Your human has a Problem, and you need to use your magical powers to solve their Problems and save the day! This system cheat sheet, like the others I’ve posted here at the Alexandrian, neatly summarizes all of the rules from the game — from basic action resolution to the mechanics for foes and disasters. It won’t teach you how to create a character, but it’s a great way to get a grip on a new system and, of course, extremely valuable during actual play for introducing new players to the game.

Success in Magical Kitties is on a scale and appears to be inspired by games like Apocalypse World and its derivatives. I shared those concerns. But then I did some research. It turns out that educational studies have not only indicated that kids in this age range can mentally comprehend these concepts, but understanding two-digit place value is part of the Common Core math standard for 1 st graders (i.e., six-year-olds).

In Magical Kitties Save the Day, one player — known as the game master (GM) — has a very special role. They describe the world in which the magical kitties live to the other players and, when the kitties take action, they use the rules of the game to figure out what happens next. As a result, during character generation you roll two six-sided dice and read them like percentile dice, generating thirty-six results from 11 to 66, to determine your Magical Power. As part of the Cat Eyes Detective Agency, the magical kitties work together to solve crimes and uncover the mysterious secrets of Sunset City. Because there’s much more to this hometown than meets the eye. Someone has frozen the city in time, inside a magical bubble, and they don’t want anyone to know about it! First, no Magical Power could completely overlap another Magical Power. If both powers were being played by different kitties in the same session, I didn’t want one of the kitties to rendered obsolete. Bonus Features could “nibble” a bit on another power’s uniqueness, but the Bonus Features of the other power needed to give it a unique upgrade path. Magical Kitties Save the Day is a family-friendly roleplaying game where players take on the role of magical cats. Every magical kitty has a human and every human has a problem. It’s up to your Kitty Krew to help solve those problems while keeping your magic a secret from the humans. Magical Kitties Power Up! also includes new rules for any series, including thirty-six brand new powers plus new bonus features for the powers you already love. Here are the rules for kitties who can control shadows, create magical art, or eat anything. If there is a narrative reason that your talent would apply to the situation you get one extra die.

Honestly, while I have fun playing with M, P seems to not be interested in the spirit of the game. Magical Kitties Save The Day is about magical kitties solving problems. P seems more interested in causing problems than solving problems. Playing Magical Kitties is easy. You have 3 Attributes – Cute, Cunning, and Fierce. You also have a Talent, a Flaw, and a Magical Power. When your kitty is trying to do something difficult, you’ll build a pool of six-sided dice with: Overall there’s a ton to love in Magical Kitties Save the Day. This is a fantastic traditional RPG that is not only great for new players and for kids (at least on the player side if not the GM side) but that also features a number of modern RPG sensibilities that integrate very well into the system. The premise is simple, you’re a magical kitten who has a human with a problem, and you’re going to try to help them with that problem. Added to that, is underlying other issues – a mouse rebellion? Baba Yaga? Dinosaurs? These make it just as bonkers as you’d like to play it. Our most recent game of it included a kitten skilled at dancing, fighting prankster mice headed by Remy, over underappreciated restaurant level food, in a dance off that involved mostly TikTok songs, after having bribed elderly cats for information using Werther’s Originals stolen from a corner shop. Filtering actions into cute, cunning, and fierce for these (as an example), worked surprisingly well, though the temptation to ask for perception rolls was equally surprisingly high.Next, you note down your starting Owie Limit of two, the fact you start with two Kitty Treats and your starting level of one. While having the deluxe wooden tokens and dice with cat paws on them would have been nice, there’s nothing actually wrong with the components in this box.

Second, a Magical Power should have an active use: Part of the fun of the game is for players to think up creative and crazy ways that they can use their powers. Players shouldn’t have to passively wait for the GM to cue them. The second half of the Rulebook includes information mainly meant for the Games Master, though it doesn’t restrict this section to GM’s eyes only like some traditional RPGs do. The last thing that your Kitty Krew can earn is to improve your Human’s or Hometown’s Problems. If you worked to solve a problem the GM can reduce the rank of that problem by one (or more for really epic stories). The cheat sheets also don’t include what I refer to as “character option chunks” (for reasons discussed here). In other words, you won’t find the rules for character creation here. The section is broken down into geographic locations, with each location featuring a number of Adventure Ingredients similar to those presented earlier with the Hometown Problems. The story features lots of different paths, showing off how you can use your kitty powers in a variety of ways while presenting multiple options for dealing with obstacles. Since Magical Kitties Save the Day is an all ages game, everyone should be able to join in the play and have fun. So if you’re pushing out of the core range and play with four- or five-year-olds, you’ll probably need to help them out a bit. (You might also consider using the optional Kitty Cards, that not only serve as fully illustrated references during play, but allow you to create a new character mostly by just dealing out a hand of cards.) But beyond that, it will be at worst a great learning opportunity.
