Running Up That Hill: 50 Visions of Kate Bush by Tom Doyle is not a typical biography, but rather a montage of different moments in her life and career with current interviews from those who knew her or transcripts from interviews with her on television shows or magazines at the time. She ‘disappears’ sometimes for more than a decade and all we ever really find out is that she was “working on the new album” in that time. Comprising fifty chapters or 'visions', The Big Sky is a multi-faceted biography of this famously elusive figure, viewing her life and work from fresh and illuminating angles. Featuring details from the author's one-to-one conversations with Kate, as well as vignettes of her key songs, albums, videos and concerts, this artful, candid and often brutally funny portrait introduces the reader to the refreshingly real Kate Bush. Some parts were lost me, as I’m not an aficionado, but to read the background and context left me completely smiling.There’s a short chapter of Wuthering Heights media reviews (Record Mirror: “B-O-R-I-N-G”), and a longer one on cover versions of her songs. Doyle looks at the recording, the times between albums when songs were worked on, new technology tested, videos thought of, and other collaborations. had great fun listening to each album after its relevant discussion in the book, which provided many ways to read the songs together/indicated where they were ongoing stories. An entertaining piece on the Cloudbusting video aside, there’s a cut and paste to the chapters as though they’ve been published somewhere before. Doyle tells us that Kate had an offer to support Fleetwood Mac on an American tour in the late 1970s which she turned down.

The less you know about Kate’s work, the more you’ll enjoy this book, but even familiar stories or well-worn anecdotes come to life because Doyle clearly covered so much ground during that 2005 interview.

Her father played classical compositions on the piano, and she listened to drinking songs and sea shanties as well as King Crimson and Pink Floyd. I'm a massive Kate Bush fan anyway but I've come away with a totally new appreciation of her as an artist and as a woman after finishing this book.
