About this deal

Only reason it lost one star is because the zips don't line up, one is straight and the other is curved meaning every time you get in or out of the tent you have to undo the two zips separately. The living area is more than 8 square metres, which is not as large as the Coleman Mosedale 5‘s for example, but much larger than the Eurohike Rydal 500‘s living room. Maybe it’s worth mentioning, that the Vango Icarus 500 dlx is erected ‘flysheet first’, meaning that the bedrooms, that are not waterproof, stay under the protective and waterproof flysheet.

We used it every year in Ireland and for the last 3 years it also served us well on our trips to France. The tent has two zipped full mesh doors, providing an entrance at the front and side of the tent, and two zipped half mesh inner doors, offering extra privacy.

If you have used this product please leave a review, or your comments for other visitors, many thanks! its very spacious and sturdy, a lot of storage space and extra pockets allow you to be more organised and saves you the hassle of putting things on the ground. One of the poles developed a small crack after about a year but we just wrapped some duct tape around it and never had another issue. I think I would change it for a different one if I could, the step is such a danger and the non blackout bedrooms are annoying, but the space is perfect for one or two people.NEGATIVES: Front door hooks are high up so I extended them with a hair band loop to reach door toggle more easily. Somif you pack up in dry conditions and have aired the tent out, you dont need to dry the groundsheet off when you get home. Its early stages of our use but the very first night absolutely chucked it down for hours and the tent was bone dry inside in morning- there may be worse conditions to come but that’s a very good start for the tent. If you're the kind of family that brings everything and the kitchen sink, you'll probably only manage four people at the very most. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Used it 4/5 times last year for long weekends in all kinds of weather the British summer can throw at you, without any problems at all. It's just the right size for me and my daughter because we can have our own rooms and the living area is perfect for our kit and a couple of chairs. We had a pole snap early on in its life but I think this was our fault as we tried to put it up with the inside attached to the fly sheet. The breathable inner fabric allows for condensation to pass through, ensuring that you stay dry and comfortable.During the heat wave it was fantastic to have the vented side doors to allow air flow through and bugs out ! The is perfect and after putting it up in the garden the kids wanted to use it for a week in Wales, it stood up to some good old fashioned Welsh weather with no leaking and has plenty of room for us. A great option for family camping trips the Vango Icarus offers spacious and comfortable accommodation for up to 5 people. It is still okay for a family of 5 though, and of course, the space on offer is more than generous for any group less of 4. This also allowed us to put our child to bed but have space between us and her without disturbing her with lighting or noise whilst we played cards.

Tents have evolved so much in the last 5 years, so the real question is this: is the Vango Icarus 500 DLX still a good little tent like it used to be, or is it an old model that should have been discontinued years ago? The sleeping area can be divided into two bedrooms, giving you some privacy and separation from the kids. The seconds bedroom is slightly over 120 cms in width, so you’d not fit a normal double mattress in it, but a small double like this would slide in easily. Regards the problem of the sloping door letting water in when coming in and out we got an adventure tarp for the front to solve this problem and can be used on the tent or awning front door or with some hocus pocus and fiddling the side door if needed. In the living area I had 2 folding chairs, a folding single camping table, kitchen equipment under the table in boxes, and a camping stove which you screw gas canisters in to, very economical. They used it for the first time recently and loved it so I am sure it will see a good few more camping trips yet. Tent had a small tear on outer tent where you use a peg I have tried telling Black's this could be resolved with a patch I am going back on holiday next week and they couldn't guarantee me having same tent by then. The front and side doors are fully meshed, while the bedroom doors are part mesh, so it’s relatively easy to keep the tent well-ventilated. Would definitely recommend this though, easy to put up with one adult (especially if you can get a child to help). It is easy to pitch, comfortable and spacious, making it suitable for beginners and occasional campers.
